Team Sky’s Chris Froome has pullled out of the Vuelta after scans confirmed he broke a bone in his ankle in a crash early on during yesterday’s Stage 11.

In a message posted to Twitter late yesterday evening, the Tour de France champion had said: “Knocked sideways into a barrier & stone wall today.

“Further scans in the morning but start unlikely as I can’t walk without crutches.”
