London-based brand Comtat has launched its first ever titanium model, the Sartorial Ti, a bespoke frame handbuilt in Italy and costing £3,399.99 for the frameset.
Until now Comtat, the brainchild of dedicated cyclist Adam Roberts who decided to combine his passion for cycling into a business and launched the brand about five years ago, has focused on high-end carbon fibre and steel frames, but this year has decided to also offer a titanium alternative. We tested the Aristo carbon frame a few years ago and were really impressed with it.
The Sartorial Ti frame is made from oversized 3AL-2.5V titanium tubing and is a bespoke frame, the customer can choose from a number of options including the bottom bracket type, geometry, frame and fork finish and even the type of weld, smooth or visible. The frame is supplied with a 330g carbon fibre which can be custom painted.
One nice detail you won’t get on a regular frame is your name engraved on the bottom bracket shell, so there’ll be no mistaking your bike for another bike when it's leant up outside the cafe.
"We have wanted to do a titanium frame for a long time, the problem was the quality had to reflect the carbon models ie. custom only, fatto a mano in italia," says Comtat founder Adam Roberts. "We knew exactly what we wanted in terms of tubing, it had to be oversized without losing a that hint of a classic look (like our carbon frames to certain degree).
"The top end of the titanium market is pretty crowded at the moment however we have achieved a bike that is exquisite to ride and it's between £1,000 and £1,500 less than other Italian made titanium frames of the same specifications and options."
Comtat claim a frame weight of 1,520g though this is only an approximate weight as the actual specifications of the frame will impact the weight. Each frame comes with a lifetime warranty and can be bought as a frameset for £3,399.99, or £5,999.99 for a complete bike.
That price puts the new Sartorial Ti right at the top end of the titanium frame market with some very special company. There's the Passoni Top Force W we tested a while ago, and frames from the likes of Independent Fabrication, De Rosa, Merlin, Moots and many other titanium specialists we don't have space to list here.
