First Minister enjoys trip along Belfast’s Comber Greenway

Volunteers who maintain award-winning route congratulated

News of Belfast’s own Comber Greenway’s growing international reputation, highlighted by its recent European Greenway Award, has prompted a visit by Northern Ireland’s First Minister the Rt Hon Peter Robinson MP MLA. The First Minister is keen to see for himself just what makes this cycling and walking route so successful and enjoy the pleasure of congratulating all those involved.

Commenting on the route Mr Robinson said: “It gives me great pleasure as the member of parliament for East Belfast, to join with Sustrans and the local community, to celebrate the recent success of this great and internationally recognised, local initiative. The result of the wide support for this project, has provided an asset of great value for the local community.

“This project is a great response to an identified need for sustainable transport in East Belfast, which found a compromise between a high quality greenway network and providing an attractive environment for both walkers and cyclists alike.

“The hard work from both Sustrans and the local community has been deservedly highlighted, with the accomplishment of receiving The European Greenway award. The Comber greenway is now internationally recognised as an example to be followed by others.”

Sustrans’ Director for Northern Ireland Steven Patterson added: “We are keen to share the recent European Greenways Award with our partners involved in the Comber Greenway project and are delighted that the First Minister, and MP for East Belfast, is able to join us in today’s celebration.

“We look forward to showing him the route and discussing with him our Vision on Sustainable Transport in East Belfast. The Comber Greenway is one crucial element of this vision as it provides a fantastic community space for people to travel in a healthy way.”
