Video: Is this man the luckiest unlucky cyclist in the world?

Watch the video and decide for yourself

Yesterday we reported on a Brazilian road safety campaign that showed bike handlebars as hunting trophies as a graphic illustration of how unsafe Brazilian roads are for cyclists. Today we bring you this, also, we think, from Brazil.

This is perhaps the most incredible near miss video we've ever seen. Shaves don't come any closer than this. If this cyclist were a cat he'd have used up all his lives at once, although at least he'd have found somewhere comfortable to sit.

And as PJ McNally reminds us in the comments below, it's not the first mattress-related story we've had in recent weeks - Tinkoff-Saxo's Matti Breschel was hit by one in a freak accident following a stage of last month's Tour of Oman.

The Dane is still recovering from his injuries and pain in his hand caused him to abandon last week's Paris-Nice after Stage 3.

road.cc'snder and first editor, nowadays to be found riding a spreadsheet. Tony's journey in cycling media started in 1997 as production editor and then deputy editor of Total Bike, acting editor of Total Mountain Bike and then seven years as editor of Cycling Plus. He launched his first cycling website - the Cycling Plus Forum at the turn of the century. In 2006 he left C+ to head up the launch team for Bike Radar which he edited until 2008, when he co-launched the multi-award winning road.cc - finally handing on the reins in 2021 to Jack Sexty. His favourite ride is his ‘commute’ - which he does most days inc weekends and he’s been cycle-commuting since 1994. His favourite bikes are titanium and have disc brakes, though he'd like to own a carbon bike one day.

Getting clobbered edge-on by a piss-stained pikey mattress wouldn't be any fun.

When I first watched this, it looked pretty bad. But after seeing it a few times, he's knocked over by the mattress that falls off the truck, he's not hit by the truck. The mattress also cushions his fall of course! Yes, either way, he's lucky.

Oh, OK , that makes it all right then 1

No no no, you're all wrong. It's not a mattress, it's version 2.0 of this thing

I hope that accident doesn't give him nightmares. Mostly because it'll be really confusing when he wakes up.

I imagine he sat up thinking "What the fuck?"

I wonder if he sat up thinking it had all been a dream?

I think that's a new cyclist collision safety system developed by Volvo.
Let's the victim have a nice lie down after the incident
