Won the lottery? Here's a dozen bikes that cost as much as a small car

"You can buy a car for that!" It’s a comment we hear a lot when the subject of expensive road bikes comes up.

You certainly can spend the price of a small hatchback on a bicycle these days. To see just what exotica is out there for a price of a new Peugeot 108 and just for a bit of fun, we’ve rounded up some of the most expensive road bikes currently available.

The cheapest bike here costs over seven and a half grand (trust Giant to make a value-for-money superbike) while the most expensive is almost twice that, and you wouldn't even be allowed to ride it in a UCI time trial. In fact most of these bikes fall foul of the UCI's increasingly daft 6.8kg weight limit, but we don't think anyone who can afford one of these is going to care very much.

These aren’t crazy one-off bikes with expensive paint jobs, oh no, they're all standard production road bikes that you can buy online or from your local bike shop, though we doubt many shops will carry any of these bikes in stock.

Canyon Ultimate CF Evo 10.0 Ltd — £11,799

Canyon is usually associated with value for money bikes, but with the Ultimate CF Evo 10.0 Ltd the German direct sales specialist has pulled out all the stops to create a stunning superbike. It has the same design and tube shaping as the regular Ultimate CF SLX, but a more advanced and costly carbon fibre layup. The result is a 665g frame and 270g fork.

There's a SRAM Red eTap transmission hung on that feathery frame with some of Germany's finest über-light components including Lightweight Meilenstein Clincher wheels and a THM Clavicula M3 SRM chainset. Yes, you can see just how much (or how little?) power it takes to propel the Ultimate CF Evo 10.0 Ltd, right out of the box.

BMC Timemachine ROAD 01 ONE 2019 — £10,000

Swiss manufacturer BMC has stepped up a notch with its top model for 2019, an aero design BMC claims is " the fastest road bike ever". It leads — literally — with BMC's sleek Integrated Cockpit System bar and stem that routes the brake hoses and gear wires routed almost-invisibly through the frame.

To help the Timemachine Road cut through the air, aero covers over the disc brake calipers smooth air flow over them, and BMC's new Aero Module shields water bottles from the wind and provides some handy storage space in the frame.

Colnago C64 Art Decor — £10,299

If you meld modern materials with traditional Italian frame-building and design, this is what you get. The C64 is a deeply-refined carbon fibre frame that's constructed by bonding tubes into lugs. That might not sound as sophisticated as moulding a frame in one piece, but it makes possible a wide range of frame sizes for a better fit, and it allows incremental refinements like the C64's new one-piece seat tube and lug without crapping an expemsive mould.

The C64 is handmade in Colnago's workshop in Cambiago. This version is fitted with Campagnolo's top groupset, Super Record EPS, and has one of the stunning special paint jobs for which Colnago is renowned.

Enigma Exemplar — from £11,999

Crafted from 6AL-4V titanium and built with only the finest and most expensive components - including colour matched Super Record groupset, Enve rims and Chris King parts – it’s a beautiful bike to behold.

Trek Madone SLR 9 Project One — £11,650

Go to Trek's Project One customisation website and you can have the new Madone 9 SLR in an array of wild colours, including this 'Refliptive' finish that's a different colour depending which direction you look at it from.

Scott Foil Premium Disc 2019 — £10,999

Scott’s Foil was a cutting-edge aero road bike when first launched in 2011, and the latest version still commands your attention if you want to ride fast. This top-end model gets a no-expense-spared build kit including Zipp 303 Firecrest wheels and a one-piece carbon fibre Syncros aero handlebar and stem.

Cervelo P5X eTap — £13,999

It may not be blessed with looks, but if you’re into pure speed, the triathlon-specific Cervelo P5X is probably as fast as it gets. This is not a bike for riding to the cafe on, that’s for sure. It's a full carbon fibre construction with SRAM Red eTap wireless gears and hydraulic disc brakes and ENVE wheels.

Specialized S-Works Sagan Tarmac Disc 2019 — £9,750

Specialized says it's shaved an impressive 200g off the frame of the Tarmac SL6 compared to the previous SL5; a 56cm Tarmac SL6 frame weighs just 733g, which is pretty staggering. The Tarmac's aerodynamics has also been tweaked so it's now claimed to be 45 seconds faster over 40km than similarly-feathery road bikes.

And if you're going to ride Specialized's flagship speedster, then you'd have to go for the special edition designed in collaboration with multiple world champion Peter Sagan.

Bianchi Specialissima Super Record EPS — £11,200

If you want an Italian-bred performance bike the Specialissima puts in a stunning performance, and this massive price tag gets you a frame equipped with Campagnolo Super Record EPS and Fulcrum Zero Nite wheels.

Pinarello Dogma F10 — £8,299

The Tour winning Dogma is a much sought after bike and this version comes with Shimano's latest Dura-Ace Di2 groupset. This Dogma is the best yet, providing exceptional performance and handling.

Storck Fascenario.3 Platinum — £10,999.99

Wilier Zero 6 SRAM Red eTap 2018 — £9,600

Wilier's 680g frame, SRAM's Red eTap shifting system and Mavic's Ksyrium Pro Exalith wheels add up to a superbike that Wilier says weighs a mere 6.1kg. Even when you've added pedals you're going to need to bolt on a couple of lead lumps to bring it up to the UCI's 6.8kg weight limit.

Cannondale SystemSix HM Carbon Dura Ace Di2 2019 — £8,500

Cannondale's flagship aero bike looks understated but is packed with high-end tech, including high-modulus carbon fibre, Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 shifting with hydraulic disc brakes and a Power2Max NG Eco Powermeter.

Giant TCR Advanced SL 0 2019 — £7,999

This beauty is Giant’s most expensive offering but compared to some of the other bikes here it doesn't look too pricey at all! Giant’s TCR Advanced has long been a favourite with racers, and the latest model offers a better stiffness to weight ratio than before - it’s stiffer for the same weight, basically. It comes fully decked out with SRAM Red eTap wireless groupset including a Quark power meter and Giant’s own carbon fibre wheels and finishing kit.

We all know people who buy these bikes don't do it for the speed.  It's all show and ego. In fact, some of the guys I've seen on these bike are lousy riders.  Often overweight. Hahaha.

Just like peple buying ferraris, lambourghinis and porches are buying them for show. At least I hope the drivers are not buying them because other cars are not fast enough for them.

at least with the bikes lighter bikes will make things easier for anyone at any level and di2 seems pretty desirable. No reason why your choice of bike should be limited by your performance. Let people buy whatever bike makes them happy.

Pleasantly surprised that the SuperSix Evo Black Inc is listed with di2. Been searching for a new bike and that was top of my list until I noticed that only the disc versions came with di2.

Double checked the Cannondale site and they do show it as di2. But look at Swift Cycles and Epic Cycles websites and they both list with mechanical... so maybe it's not di2 in the UK? (I notice both sites have an illustration instead of a real photo of the bike, so maybe it was an early spec)

Not quite sure its really worth spending that much money on a carbon bike? Whilst I've still got a 2002 Look KG381 which rides sublimely, I know if I ever hit the deck in it, the repair options are limited. 

 Out of all of them, the Enigma can be welded and fixed.

If I had this amount of disposable, "Colnago Master 1st gen. Chromed team bike, full 50th anniversary Campagnolo gs" from Ebay does it for me.

Absolutely correct, I've seen the same thing in a number of sports and so often us Brit's are the worst offenders. British skiers, so often seen in this year's colours, riding this year's skis, being overtaken by the local farmers wearing bobble hats, with long skinny skis from the 80's.  Junior karting, where parents try to throw money at the problem of a shortfall in talent. We just love the whole consumerism thing; If it's new and shiny, and in this year's colour scheme, it must be better than what I bought last year.

On the other edge of the scale, you don't turn up to a cat 4 winter series crit on a Nuevo Record equipped Master Olympic

And the other point is that some people buy a Six Black inc because they want the best Six there is. The Six being quite excellent. Some don't brag about it, they buy it because that's what they want. And those people may just ride a CAAD8 in the crit or just not do crits at all.

Most of the bikes up there are the cycling equivalent of a Civic-R, or a Golf R32 - quicker round the nurbergring than a DB9, but which is more desirable

Having passed and dropped a guy on a power metered up Storck Aernario Platinum on Leith the other day, better spend the money on getting fit first I think if you're going to throw megabucks at a superbike.

Let people buy & ride what they want, it makes absolutley fuck all difference to you.

Nobody is going to buy the bikes above on aesthetics or because they're practical. People will buy them because they think they'll make them faster, so it's reasonable to question what value to someone who's not really in the shape to take advantage of them.

Then again, if it floats your boat go for it.

Let's be clear: 

1 Buying or even just wanting a nice bike won't make you fat or slow.

2 If you want to buy a nice bike, that's okay. 

3 If you don't want to, that's okay too.

4 Nice bikes are not a rip off, or exclusively bought by mugs, even if they aren't such great value for money as other, arguably less nice bikes.

5 Nice bikes might conceivably be better in some respects.

If you can't express an appreciation of fine bicycles here, on this website, without being judged for it, where can you?

Pretty much. Reading through some of these comments pissed me off. Let people buy what makes them happy. Good for you if you're really fit and can drop other riders on better bikes. Sounds like you're just jealous that those guys can afford shiny expensive gear and you whiners can't. To the guys who buy super bikes and are out there looking "fat" as you very nice people call it, good on you, better to be outside riding than in front of the TV.
