Supermarket chain Aldi is holding another of its regular cycling special buys this Sunday, and pick of the bargains is a Garmin Edge 200 priced at just £69.99. The retail price is £129.99, though shopping around reveals you can get it a good deal cheaper, but this Aldi price is the lowest we’ve yet seen.
Shopping around, a Garmin Edge 200 would cost you £82.99 from wiggle, £84.99 from Chain Reaction Cycles, and £78.58 from Bikeinn.com. That makes the Aldi price of £69.99 a steal.
The Edge 200 is Garmin’s entry-level GPS computer designed specifically for cycling, and is small, lightweight and easy to use. The screen provides most of the data you need to record your rides, from speed to distance and time, and can also provide useful training features like a virtual partner to pace yourself against familiar routes. Garmin Edge 200 for £70 – a quick look online shows no-one doing it at that price at the moment, but that’s quite a common price for these things to sell at. Basically, wait for any big bike retailer to have a ‘sale’ (which won’t be long, there always seems to be one on somewhere) and you’ll get an edge 200 for £70. e.g. I remember Halfords doing them at that price a few months back.
Other stuff seems remarkably cheap, so cheap in fact that I would be interested in seeing reviews/being able to try the stuff out to see if it is in fact reasonable quality, ‘good value’ stuff worth considering, or indeed just cheap basic fairly rubbish stuff like that available from Sports Direct (e.g. Sports Direct cycling shoes are rubbish (you can bend them in half), and while the Aldi shoes aren’t normally that bad, a load of local guys had them and three of the four had the soles snap when out on a cycling holiday in France – all the shoes were bought roughly 5 months before).

Interesting all the gear is listed as “mountain bike”, makes me wonder if there’s a separate road bike gear sale on the way.
I’m generally a fan of Aldi stuff, but I’m starting to appreciate the get-what-you-pay-for side of things with their stuff. My arse particularly is definitely thanking me for “investing” in some Castelli bibs recently!

Last year I bought a pair of padded winter tights from them and it served me really well. Although the fitting could be better (it’s not very snug), I’ve spend quite a few hours on and off road with it in sub-zero snow and rain filled tours and it did not let me down. And it still looks like it will be with me for years to come. It is true indeed that after 3 hours on the saddle I start to feel the difference between this and and my expensive DHB… in favour of the latter..
The helmet the sold 2 years ago is simply all you need. Can’t feel any difference between my MET and this one.
I have quite a bit of Aldi
I have quite a bit of Aldi clothing. The shorts and leggings are very good for the money. The winter gloves are outstanding and I have managed to eventually wear holes in mine just though use. I also have an Aldi softshell jacket which will copy with almost any winter weather other than thick wet fog and rain. The winter leggings are almost too warm unless it’s below zero
Yea, for long and fast rides, it’s not gonna be up to the performance of stuff from the likes of Castelli, but for shorter rides it’s fine.
The workstand is very good value for money as well. They normally do road cycling stuff at the start of May, so it may be worth waiting a few weeks if you’re a cheapskate (or skint) roadie
I wore their softshell
I wore their softshell through winter and it was the warmest I’ve ever been commuting. The winter gloves are fantastic too.

I have their soft shell jacket, other than the short sleeves (it’s an odd cut,I don’t have long arms) it’s a great jacket.

I bought an Edge Touring Plus
I bought an Edge Touring Plus for 50% of RRP last month. It’s profoundly mediocre and has so far failed to navigate any pre-planned routes without “off course” messages or occasional off road routing, the interfaces are awful and customer services useless. I get the feeling this company’s products are being starved of the R&D to make them really good so they’re discounting heavily to shift boxes. Think early smartphone & you get the picture…
At £70 an edge 200 sounds over priced when it does no more than a £30 bike computer.

I had exactly this problem
I had exactly this problem and it drove me mad. Customer services replied to me to read a certain page of the manual which just said to turn recalculation (in routing options) off altogether. When exporting files to the Garmin, use a TCX track which gives you the turn by turn navigation. I use ridewithgps.com to map my rides and it exports really easily (though I pay to export straight from the site to the Garmin rather than download and upload) and works like a charm now. Did a 100mile ride straight away without a single problem.
Yeah you have to put time in
Yeah you have to put time in with a Garmin – arguable that you shouldn’t have to do that, but you can get a touring plus to behave – I have. Secret is only ever use tracks (not routes) on device but use routes in basecamp to ‘snap fit’ to road, then export as track. Awkward? Yes. Works? Yes. However on the plus side they are properly robust – I have washed a garmin before (complete 1.5 hour wash) and it’s been fine.
Aldi cycling stuff is great
Aldi cycling stuff is great for everyday riding.
I have a few pairs of their fantastic winter gloves, two softshell jackets: the first lasted 3 full winters of daily commutes, now used for cold-weather runs, winter tights: warm, water-resistant (pro version) & comfy.
I’ve used it mostly for commuting, but used the jackets & gloves for club rides & early season sportives without any issue.
If you’re riding over 100km, you might want some shorts/longs with a better pad, depends how you ride.
Great for winter/ commuting / training rides: save the nice gear/ label snobbery for best…… just don’t get sore if you get dropped by an Aldi-wearing rider
