A 13-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving following multiple hit-and-runs, which saw three cyclists and an elderly pedestrian hit in four separate incidents on Friday morning that police in Lincolnshire believe are linked.
Lincolnshire Police made the arrest in relation to the four separate incidents, which happened between 6:44 am and 10:04 am in Boston, Maltby Le Marsh, Alford and Calceby on Friday.
The boy has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving whilst unfit through drugs, driving without a licence and insurance and aggravated vehicle taking.
“This is an unusual and, most likely, a worrying set of incidents for people who may be in the area at the time, and we are, of course, sending our best wishes and thoughts to those injured for a quick and full recovery,” said Investigating Officer Sgt Billy Spence.
“We have a young man in custody, and we are keeping an open mind about the exact events, but we believe these incidents are linked.”
The police received reports of the first incident on Priory Road in Boston at 6:44 am, when a male cyclist was seriously injured after being knocked off his bike by a driver who did not stop. The rider has since been taken to the hospital for treatment.
At 8:20 am, the police received a second report of a male cyclist being knocked off his bike by a driver who failed to stop in Maltby Le Marsh in Alford.
An elderly man then suffered minor injuries after being hit by a driver who did not stop at 8:40 am on West Street, Alford. The same driver is reported to have nearly hit a small child in the same location.
At 10:04 am, Lincolnshire Police received another report of a cyclist who was knocked off his bike by a driver who also failed to stop on Bluestone Heath Road, Calceby.
The police believe that a black Range Rover may have been involved in each of the incidents.
The teenager was detained in the area of Haiton Road, Louth, at 10:23 am.
The police are appealing for “the help of the public in order to make sure we have as much information and evidence as possible in order to carry out a thorough enquiry.”
“If you have any dashcam footage, CCTV, witnesses, or any other information that could help and haven’t already spoken to us we would appreciate you getting in touch. I would also ask that the wider public do not speculate about what has happened here today and allow us to carry out our enquiries as fairly and freely as possible.”
