road.cc have been offered the chance to enter a team of six for the Cyclone24 endurance track event at Manchester Velodrome on May 6th and 7th 2017 and we asked you to comment below if you fancied joining us. Well it’s the closing date so read on to see if you’ve made the cut.
If this was reality TV then we’d leave a long drawn out pause here before naming the lucky few but we’ll just crack on with it, so Richard1982, stelliosuk and w3ftm you we’ll be camping out track centre with team road.cc members iUpham and simontuck for 24hrs at the beginning of May.
The sixth and final team member is road.cc writer Stuart Kerton who will be doing his best to organise and motivate the team to borderline greatness.

“The UK’s only 24 hour track cycling challenge, Cyclone24 sees riders face the unenviable task of staying awake for 24 hours whilst battling physical exhaustion and mental fatigue as they take to the velodrome track vying to cover the furthest distance possible within the time frame.
Teams are made up of 6 riders and the challenge format is in relay style, with one rider of your team on the track at a time. Your team must devise their strategy on how and when to rotate, when to eat, when to sleep, Cyclone24 challenges strength, determination and team spirit.”
Bike hire, helmets and shoes are all included if you require them although you can obviously use your own including track bikes as long as they meet Manchester Velodrome’s criteria.
As far as the rider qualifications go you either need to have/will have:
- attended a Cyclone24 track session
- completed a minimum of one beginners/introduction track session at any velodrome
- hold a British Cycling Track Accreditation
This is a safety requirement for the event, so that all riders have completed the basic levels of safety on track and we don’t have anyone turning up on the day who has never ridden the track before. There’ll also be a waiver form which each rider will have to sign which states that they confirm they have one of the above.

SSSHhhh FTP means nothing. This is for fun. What we really want to know is if you have any fun skills. Can you juggle? Can you make cakes, or casseroles? Do you own loads of camping chairs? What’s your best joke? Can you complete a rubik’s cube in record time? We’re going to be in the same place for 24 hours so it’s essential that we can have a bit of a laugh and not just talk about power meters and how many intervals we did last week. Yawn!! There’s nice slippery floors in track centre at Manchester (I seem to remember they play netball and 5-a-side on it) instead of the carpet you find at Stratford, maybe we could have a breakdancing competition……
We’d like to win. Of course we would, but we have to face up to the fact that if a team turns up that all have their own bikes they’ll have an advantage. The hire bikes are great but they don’t have aero wheels and they have super low gearing designed for novices. Common sense says that they’ll get round the track quicker for less crank revolutions which has to be more efficient surely?

The first time I rode the track I’d gone to Manchester to have a go at one of their taster sessions with a friend. I must confess at first I was terrified by the banking, but once we’d set off I was absolutely hooked. Where other people would go off for a drink or a rest, I relentlessly ploughed the blue line for the hour. From the moment I’d completed my first lap I knew that this was what I wanted to do. The next day I’d bought a track bike and was driving 60 miles each way, three times a week to my nearest velodrome. As luck would have it there’s now a velodrome just ten minutes from my house which means I can now spend even more time riding. There is nothing I enjoy more than just riding round the velodrome. I’ve had a few attempts at doing the hour record, each one just makes me more excited about the next! People have asked me if I get bored of just riding round – they must be mad, I get GIDDY at the thought of getting to spend a full hour lapping the velodrome without any distractions. When I’m not at the velodrome I’m online reading about track cycling, track bikes, or track coaching (which I’m just starting).
I also do speedy riding; crits, circuit races, track league, etc, but none of it is as fun to me as just racking up the laps at the velodrome 🙂 I can provide you with my FTP and all that guff if you really want it, but at the end of the day each rider will have to ride for 4 hours, the biggest hurdle there will be keeping mentally engaged and having fun with it. Also an average day I usually go to bed around 2am-3am and get up at 6am so fatigue isn’t really a concern of mine!
Anyway if you’re looking for a solid rider that will happily jump on the track for a four hour stint then I’d definately like to throw my hat into the ring for that!

I don’t know who you are. I don’t know what you want. If you are looking for breakdancing, I can tell you I can’t breakdance. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills, skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let me go, that’ll be the end of it. I will not pester you, I will not try and persuade you. But if you don’t, I will pester you, I will persaude you, and I will go to Manchester.

A quick summary of my highly specialised skillset…
1) I can consume more tea and biscuits than my size would lead you to believe/fear.
2) I once assembled a fully automous replica of Johnny 5 and so have the skills and expertise to initiate ‘Judgement Day’ if required/not selected.
3) I also have an encyclopedic knowledge of 80’s films if that helps somehow.
4) I can order a beer AND a pizza in Polish.
5) I am almost certainly the world’s most obsessed fan of Yorkshire Tea, I have various (increasingly disturbing) ways to prove this.
6) I’m no stranger to slippy floors and I’m a dab hand at curling. Although we might get shouted at if we start sliding stones around maybe :-/

Having ridden on the track for the first time at christmas I’ve got to say I loved it, have a great time guys, if there’s one in London later in the year/next year then I’d be on board (pun intended)
