It’s easy enough to complain about the price of modern bike components, but if you really want to have a seizure, check out this retro-tastic mountain bike groupset on eBay. It’s currently being offered for a staggering €8,400 – that’s around £7,600…

The reason for that fantastical price tag is because there are some extremely rare bits of 1990s mountain bike jewellery in there from Paul Components and Kooka that’ll have a certain kind of retro bike collector feeling very hot under the collar indeed.

Most of the kit is what the retro bike community know as New Old Stock – completely unused kit that’s been sitting gathering dust for the past 20 years. To add to the rarity value, whoever put this little collection together has also ensured it’s all anodised in the red, gold and green ‘Rasta’ colours instantly familiar to anyone who had a large poster of Bob Marley on the wall when this lot was new.

Some of the highlights include the three-colour fade anodised Kooka cranks and stem, while even the most hardened cynic will agree that the Paul Component rim brakes and levers are beautifully made, even if their performance is best left in the past.

Foul Crank Brothers 50:50 pedals do ruin the retro vibe somewhat (Image Credit: alexasophie / eBay)

Other bits are slightly more suspect from a period standpoint. Those Crank Brothers 50:50 pedals might be in the right colours, but they’re interlopers from the mid-2000s – and they were utterly abysmal then.

Either way, with the frankly insane prices some retro kit goes for, I don’t doubt a buyer will eventually be found for this lot, though the chance of seeing it being used on a trail is minimal. Personally, I think I’d rather buy a very nice bike and then ride it daily. Each to their own, I guess.
