Coventry is gearing up to host the 2013 British Cycling Cycle Speedway National Finals this Bank Holiday Monday, 25 August, with upwards of 1,000 spectators expected to descend on Hearsall Common, Earlsdon, for the event.
In preparation of staging the 62nd edition of the finals, a mobile grandstand has been put in place overlooking the banked circuit that is home to Coventry Cycle Speedway, and other temporary amenities are also being installed including an LED screen.
The action begins at 12 noon on Sunday with the women’s final, where Leicester’s Lauryn Davies is favourite. In the men’s event, which starts at 3pm, Andy Angell is aiming to complete a hat-trick of wins.
The finals will be filmed by Sky Sports and shown in 32 countries worldwide, according to British Cycling, and there will also be entertainment throughout the day including from the Coventry Festival Band.
Hearsall Common has another connection with speed – it’s where as a youth, local resident Sir Frank Whittle first saw an aircraft land, in 1916. The sight would inspire him to follow a career in aeronautical engineering, and he would later pioneer the jet engine.
