I think you've hit the nail on the head there. There is stuff that's as good, if not better, much cheaper.
And yet regardless of that engineering point, it would still be more room than the majority of motorists give cyclists....

You have to be a right sweaty betty to corrode an aluminium stem to that level. It doesn't appear to be cracked though, that's just the paint...
Can we agree that a manufacturer refusing to sell you a component if your bike isn't good enough means we've finally reached peak bike snobbery? ;¬...
Possibly. The one-way charge was only about £80 on top of the normal charges, which is a lot less than I've come across in the US for an equivalent...
