Polar offers new RCX5 heart rate monitor with GPS option

HRM specialist Polar is already shipping its latest model to dealerships; it features a new smaller optional and separate GPS module to produce downloadable speed, pace and distance mapping.

The RCX5 wrist-watch-style unit is similar to the latest Polar models that display the data large and clearly readable in a tough aluminium case. New features are ZoneOptimizer to enable simple adjustment to different heart-rate target zones and, of interest to cycling time-triallists, RacePace to set a target time for a given distance which in turn monitors progress against the target. As usual with Polar, there's an optional kit for cyclists who prefer to mount their HRM on the handlebars.

The new G5 GPS sensor weighs 34 grams and is designed to be worn on an elastic strap around an arm or similar. It communicates wirelessly with the head unit by means of Polar's proprietary W.I.N.D. protocol. The battery life of the new sensor is 18 hours, is charged via mini USB and is considerably smaller than the existing G3 W.I.N.D. GPS sensor although it is backwards compatible for later upgrade.

There is also a new 23-gram S3+ shoe sensor for runners.

What’s more, everything is packed into a slim functional design with sporty looks.”

The new RCX5 model is initially available in black and packed with the G5 GPS module and chest transmitter for £359.50. According to Polar, there will also be a red version of the RCX5 wrist unit in September.

Alternative packages available are RCX5 Run which includes an s3+ stride sensor for £329.50 or RCX5 Bike which includes the existing CS W.I.N.D. speed sensor but no G5 GPS sensor for £297.50. All the accessories are interchangeable and addable later.
