Shimano MT60 shoe

Good shoes these MT60s. They give you plenty of support on the bike, they're easy to walk in off it, they're waterproof and hard wearing and comfy to boot. The styling might be a bit rambler for some of the more style-conscious but as a general purpose commuting/touring/mtbing shoe they're hard to beat.

We've tested the MT60's big brother, the MT90 boot, on road.cc in the past and that's always been a winter riding favourite. The MT60 is a low-ankle design and slightly lighter in the construction, but still very sturdy at well over a kilo a pair (a bit less if your feet aren't flippers). The leather upper is mated to a trail sole with an SPD track, and you lace them up with proper laces, which you can keep out of the way of moving parts with a lace loop. There's reflective detailing on the heel and a reinforced toe.

The MT60s have a waterproof Gore-Tex liner and the tongue is gussetted to keep the elements away from your tootsies. And they do a good job: water spray takes a long while to get into the toe box, although the low ankle means it's nowhere near as dry as a boot. On the bike the sole is plenty stiff enough to get the power down, and they're comfy off the bike too, a bit clumpy as stiff-soled shoes tend to be but easily accommodating enough to spend a few hours in without even noticing, save for the odd clack of the cleats on the ground; they're recessed, but not very far.

I've been wearing these for commuting and off-road duties for the last month or so, along with some longer road rides, and they've been excellent. They're the kind of shoe you could pack for a tour and not need any others, save for maybe a pair of flip flops. Styling-wise they're, well, inoffensive. They're not the most cutting edge in terms of fashion, but that's not really the point of a shoe like this. They're durable, too, with the full leather upper putting up with the scuffs and knocks of daily use with nary a whisper of complaint. £100 is a fair wedge for a pair of commuting shoes but they should last for ages; my original MT90s are in their sixth year now.

Sizing wise they're at the small end of the spectrum; I'm either a 47 or a 48 depending on make and I need the bigger size in these. If you get a chance, try before you buy.
