UCI logo on whiteUCI visits Richmond, Virginia ahead of 2015 Road World Championships decision
A delegation from world cycling’s governing body, the UCI, is currently visiting Richmond, Virginia, to assess the city’s suitability to host the 2015 UCI Road World Championships.
Information gathered during the visit, as well as a presentation due to take place in July, will help determine whether it will be Richmond that will be awarded the championships rather than the other candidate, the Gulf state of Oman.
The Richmond Times-Despatch reports that the nine-day championships could provide a $135.3 million boost to the local economy with 500,000 visiting the area, which would also benefit from the exposure generated through TV pictures of the event being beamed worldwide.
The successful bid will be revealed in September at this year’s UCI Road World Championships in Copenhagen.
Next year’s championships will be held in Limburg in the Netherlands, followed by
the Italian city of Florence in 2013 and Ponferrada in Spain in 2014.
