Police witness appeal after incident involving woman cyclist & HGV in Ellesmere Port

Female cyclist in critical condition after collision last Thursday

Cheshire Police have issued a witness appeal following an incident in Ellesmere Port in which a woman cyclist was seriously injured in a collision involving a heavy goods vehicle

If you witnessed the collision or have any information Cheshire Police want you to call them on 0845 458 0000, quoting incident number 514 of May 19.

The incident took place at 3.18pm last Thursday (19 May) at the junction of Cromwell Road and Whitby Road - the 40 year old female cyclist suffered a broken pelvis and a serious leg injury when she was involved in a collision with a silver coloured HGV. She was treated at the scene by paramedics and then taken to the Countess of Chester hospital where according to a report in the Ellesmere Port Pioneer her condition is currently listed as critical.

While the exact details of this incident are not yet known it would appear to once again underline the particular danger posed to women cyclists at junctions by heavy goods vehicles and to underline the fact that this problem is not one confined to London where there has been a disproportionate number of fatal cases involving women riders in collision with HGVs in recent years – which have led to calls for stricter European laws governing lorry safety led notably by the See Me Save me campaign launched by the family of Elidh Cairns who was killed by a lorry in West London in 2009.
