Before we get too negative and repeat the traditional lamenting of UK cycle facilities - I spent 12 weeks touring around france/italy/switzerland/germany this summer and I can tell you now that we do not have the monopoly on crap cycle routes. France in particular had some spectacularly worthless 'farcilities'. (Germany was the best, as if you had to ask!)
I recall a trip on Eurostar a few months before the opening (Herself had a friend who worked for Eurostart who were looking for a number of people to trial the service) and it was just the same! We dawdled through Southern England, went through the tunnel and then the increase in speed in FRance was all to noticeable. Eventually took UK many years to catch up.
True, that used to be really noticeable, mind you, the first time I went from St Pancras after the new high-speed line opened, it seemed like the opposite is true now, quicker on UK side.
As someone who used to commute out towards Dartford way, couldn't believe how quickly the bridge came into view, nor crossing the Medway seemingly a couple of minutes later.
