Kid smashes Guinness World Record for solving Rubik’s Cubes while cycling

A boy in India has smashed the Guinness World record for solving Rubik’s Cubes while cycling by managing 1,010 of the mind-bending puzzles while on two wheels.

P.K. Arumugam, from Chennai, cycled for six hours and seven minutes last weekend to beat the standing record of 751 cubes solved in seven hours, two minutes.

Speaking to the Deccan Chronicle, Arumugam said that he combined his passion for solving cubes and cycling six months ago and since then has been practising for three hours each day.

The previous record was made by Sreevatesh Rajkumar in 2016.

“My inspiration was Bhargav Narasimhan, who set the first Guinness record from India in this category. I applied for Guinness Records in May last year but my application was rejected. Only after three months, when I reapplied, it was accepted,” he said.

Arumugam wants to be an engineer and has finished his school studies. He says he aims to claim more records with the help of his cube.

In 2015 we reported how a cyclist managed to solve a Rubik’s Cube one-handed in less than 40 seconds, while steering a Boris Bike with the other.

The video, now offline, was shot in Hyde Park on a recent trip to London by Simone Santarsiero, whose YouTube channel reveals him to be a big fan of the 3D puzzle invented in 1974 by Ernő Rubik.

A spokesman for the Royal Parks, which manages Hyde Park said: “The Royal Parks welcomes safe and responsible cyclists but behaviour such as this is reckless.

“It not only endangers the safety of the cyclist but also that of other park users and wildlife.

“It is against the law to ride a bike in a manner that is likely to endanger someone else.”
