UK woman involved in bike crash in Australia dies after month in coma

Amy Haskew lost control of hire bike on downhill corner

A British backpacker has died after suffering head injuries in a bike crash in Australia. The Sun reports that Amy Haskew, 25, had been in a coma for a month after losing control of her bike and falling off an eight foot drop.

Haskew had been travelling around the world with her boyfriend Sam Tall since November. On April 9, she was riding a hired bike in the seaside resort of Mallacoota, Victoria, when she lost control. Local police said it appeared she had failed to take a bend while riding down Karbeethong Avenue towards the junction with Lakeside Drive.

Paramedics took Haskew to an air ambulance plane at the closest airport and she required a blood transfusion on the way to Royal Melbourne Hospital. She was placed in an induced coma and a recent brain scan revealed that she had sustained extensive damage. Yesterday, her parents, who had flown from their home in Romford to be with her, announced that she had lost her fight for life.

A friend of Haskew’s, Charlotte Ellis, set up a fundraising page for her medical care and to help the family. Leftover funds will be donated to a relevant charity.
