Giro d'Italia 8: Diego Ulissi doubles up, Cadel Evans in pink

Change at top of GC after first medium mountain stage

Diego Ulissi of Lampre-Merida has taken his second stage win of the 2014 Giro d'Italia, and now lies sixth overall, beating Robert Kiserlovski of Trek Factory Racing to win Stage 8 of the race on the Category 1 finish at Montecopiolo. BMC Racing's Cadel Evans finished fifth today and takes over the race leader's maglia rosa from fellow Australian Michael Matthews of OricaGreenEdge.

Lotto Belisol's Wilco Keldrrman finished third today, but just as happened at Montecassino on Firday irt's Evans who gained most on the stage, the  2011 Tour de France champion taking over the race lead, with a 57 second gap to his closest challenger, last year's runner-up Rigoberto Uran of Omega Pharma-Quick Step.

Colombia's Julien Arredondo was one of the riders who animated the race today, the last survivor of a ten-man break, and was joined on the descent before the final climb by Europcar's Pierre Rolland. The latter had an advantage of 17 seconds coming under flamme rouge, but faded badly and was caught inside the closing couple of hundred metres.

Cadel, managed to wheelsuck/TT his way to a tour victory and looks like he has fluked out in the Giro with most of the contenders either crashed out or the wrong side of a crash. I just hope that if he wins it he does so by having the balls to try and win a stage, just for a change.

I thought Cadel was on his way out after watching his performances last year but he looks in top form at the minute.

It'll be interesting to see if he can keep this up for the next two weeks. I'll be hugely impressed if he can carry this form through to Le Tour.
