Boris now says this:
http://www.transportnewsbrief.co.uk/top-stories/boris-johnson-turns-cycl...
"Cyclists staging protests across London are scaring people into switching to a different mode of transport says the Mayor London."
I think he may be correct.
Fixed.
Some of the quiet ways are vastly better - eg quiet way 3 from clapham into central londin is way safer than super highway 7
Yep, CS7 has some really scary bits. It's the Stupidhighway I've used the most.
I've commuted across London for years and used a lot of those LCC routes that'll probably form the foundation of the 'quiet ways'. Actually you'd be surprised. They skip the major junctions and a lot of the traffic lights, so they're no slower than the Cycle Stupidhighways, plus they're safer and more enjoyable to use.
But yes, many of those who drive don't need to. And many of those who drive can't be trusted with a skateboard, let alone a motor vehicle.
I'm not gonna treble my commute time using 'quiet ways' full of parked cars that go everywhere but where I want to go.
How about making the direct routes cycle friendly? (that means segregated - the olympic road shutdown proved that many who currently drive really dont need to...)
Direct for who? Just those who live near to the superhighways?
If you're commute rally would treble, maybe you could just ride the main routes as before, and then cross some of the dangerous junctions on foot. Maybe that would be a compromise. It's what I do when there's no reasonably suitable alternative route.
We've got to be realistic here. Superhighways don't work unless they have full segregation, and we don't have the cash for more than a few miles of those. And all they do, frankly, is encourage cyclists to use a route with dangerous junctions.
TfL's announcement is good news for cyclists.
And here's the story:
