Mountain bike rider Steve Peat has announced his retirement next season from pro cycling with a farewell video.
Titled “Cheers” the three minute video shows Peat, aka “Sheffield Steel”, riding some gorgeous Lofoten Islands trails in Norway.
He calls World Cup Downhill “the toughest and most rewarding thing in this sport” but says the clock ticks on more than just the race runs.
He says: “For 25 years I’ve lived for race weekends, have traveled the world riding new trails, meeting new people and trying to beat the clock on the hardest of courses”.
“Competing at the highest level has given me everything, but also takes everything”.
“Next year”, he says, “is time for my final world cup season. My priorities may change but the fun and adventure that two wheels gives me will continue forever. Cheers.”
There’s also a behind the scenes video, which you can watch here.

Lovely film – a fitting
Lovely film – a fitting tribute to a great rider. I remember first following Peaty as a fourteen year old boy pouring over MBUK – I’m amazed he’s continued to ride at such a level for so long.
Great lad but dull dull dull
Great lad but dull dull dull movie. Nothing captured from his life at the cutting edge of MTB.
Met him at his Bike Bonanza
Met him at his Bike Bonanza at Ponds Forge the other week. Top bloke and a very good cycle jumble.
He’s a class act.
(I bet an xray of his body would show some nuts and bolts 😉 )

Dull? I thought the film was the perfect backdrop for his retirement announcement. He didn’t use it as a platform to ‘show off’ or highlight his career. You can find the highlights elsewhere.
