    Food in left pocket, rain
Food in left pocket, rain jacket in the middle, phone/keys/ID/cash in right pocket. Spares in the saddle bag. For a while I did keep food in a top tube bag, because when I first joined a club the group pace was a little quick to be fiddling around with jersey pockets. I also used it as a litter bin for a while. Screw everyone else.

That I should have bought alu
That I should have bought alu for my first bike, then carbon for my second, rather than cheap carbon, then good carbon, then replacing the cheap carbon with alu.

That when I bought my good carbon bike, the matt plastic paint finish is a pig to clean, compared to a ‘normal’ gloss paint job.

    That Mavics flex.

Not to sell on my self-built Reynolds 653 with Campag.

Sounds like you made a decent
Sounds like you made a decent getaway, but I can understand you feeling shaken up. I think I might have flared up and jumped off the bike, but I DO NOT recommend this, it’s just an instinctive thing when the adrenaline jumps.

Unless you have another viable route home, I’d get a camera pronto. You may not be remembered or see them again, but video footage will be a good idea if you do and anything happens. You might also choose to record all your rides on Strava or similar, because video shot at 20mph can look quite quick, so correlating GPS logs that verify your speed are a good idea if anyone tries to shift blame (“the cyclist was going too quick” etc).

I’d recommend a Contour HD Roam. I paid £150 through Amazon for the camera, an SDHC memory card and a helmet mount. Cheaper than a Gopro and doesn’t make you look like a tellytubby. HD footage, wide viewing angle, 3.5 hrs battery and you can rotate the lens to ensure the picture is the right way up regardless of where you mount it on the helmet.

Thinking about it, you could also try making a mental note of the principals’ name, then namedropping it if confronted, see if that makes any difference.

Don’t let it put you off riding though.

    Well firstly, have you seen
Well firstly, have you seen the reviews for the Aquilo and Spitfire?

However, this cropped up in another thread recently:
    http://cielorossobikes.com/cielo-rosso-custom-built-titanium-frames-601-p.asp
Now at £700 it would probably be under your radar, but given that it’s a full custom Ti frame from a British firm (although manufactured in the far east) and they look classy, I wouldn’t write it off. If I recall correctly, Simmo72 on here has one and loves it. You could try PMing him. If it worked out, you would be left with funds for some serious parts…!

    I think the problem with
I think the problem with recovery rides for amateurs is partly that you can end up being overtaken by grannies on shopping bikes or whatever, and your ego won’t allow that, and also that, especially on UK roads, faster feels safer in traffic. Not super speed, but I definitely feel safer at 22mph sat in the traffic flow, than pootling at 11mph and having everything pass me by way too closely.

Personally, I find recovery rides to be a luxury. I’m lucky if I get out on the bike more than twice a week (excluding 2 days commuting), which is why I’ve added gym sessions, because we go there as a family anyway.

E bikes are a bloody menace. I cannot be the only person to nearly kill myself chasing the bike up to road before hearing the ‘humm’ which explains the sweat, lack of breath and banging heartbeat.

Don’t I bloody know it. Bought the missus one to start getting her out & build up fittness and confidence. All I seem to do is bury meself chasing her down.

Well, apart from the other day, whilst hitting a short steep climb she managed to turn the motor off rather than onto high power. How I laughed :-)

    Wife motorpacing – sounds awesome!

The other week I saw two lads coming towarda me on the shared cycle path on mountain bikes doing about 30mph. Without pedalling!. As they zoomed past I was engulfed in a cloud of blue smoke and engine buzz. It seems they had modified their bikes by fitting 2 stroke engines to them with throttles etc. God knows where the petrol tank was. I caught in on hd video. Informed the police. You can clearly make out their faces. Police woman didn’t know them. I gave her a cd with the film on and al she was bothered about was if I could print of a herd copy for her!
Needless to say I haven’t heard anything about it.

No doubt this will be ‘cyclists’ fault as well when the mainstream media get hold of it…

I actually thought you were going to post about the speed tuning kits that are in the news…

    Sorry, I think he’s wrong*.
Sorry, I think he’s wrong*. He’s justifying the long stem on the basis of your long torso / short legs, yet he’s also recommending 175mm cranks. There’s a reason that 56cm bikes nearly always fit 172.5mm cranks as standard, and you don’t sound to be of sufficiently odd proportions to preclude that. The reach sounds way too long.

I am curious to see you on a bike- if he’s right you must have arms like a chimpanzee!

*I have no qualifications and haven’t even seen you on a bike, so I shouldn’t be trusted either!

People on here rave about Billy Bilsland Cycles – that might be Glasgow though?

My fitter is based at the Manchester velodrome – perhaps see if the Commonwealth Games venue has something similar?

So if the 2014 Secteur in a
So if the 2014 Secteur in a 56cm has a reach of 387mm and stack of 590mm, that would be an effective reach of 537mm (or thereabouts).

My 56cm Trek Madone in H2 fit also has a reach of 387mm. I have a 120mm stem, which is right for me. I’m a touch shorter than 6″ last time I checked (more than 5″11″ though), with trouser size of 31-32 leg. So we are similar size, and I have been fitted to my bike, and can confirm it’s right for me.

If the fitter is correct in terms of your required dimensions, then I’d say you need a sportier frame in a bigger size. That way, the frame would be longer (thus allowing you to reduce the stem length), and the lower stack height would be compensated for by the increase in frame size.

On second thoughts, this doesn’t add up; if you subtract a reasonable stem length from 537mm (let’s say a 110mm stem), you’re left trying to find a frame with a reach of 427mm. Trek’s H1 geometry (longer and racier than their H2 average-joe sizing) only gives 407mm even in a 62cm model! I’m not having it, that on a frame intended for guys who are in the region of 6″4″, you’d still need a 130mm stem!

Definitely think a 2nd opinion is in order. Whereabouts are you, people may be able to suggest somewhere trusted?

Hi all, we want this to be a thoughtful and insightful film that goes beyond the standard clip show format and doesn’t take a them/us approach, widening divisions on the road – that’s exactly why we’re reaching out to people like you. Please tell us what you want to see, and get in touch.

As you can see, folk can be quite passionate about road safety round here!

The thing is, if a sensationalist show (which granted, may not be your aim) shows a stupid white van man, then if as a result, everyone stereotypes white van men, it doesn’t really put those white van men (safe ones or otherwise) at any greater risk – people just think they’re all idiots, whether justifiable or not. On the other hand, when these shows display a reckless cyclist, those same viewers that cast stereotypes think it’s ok to drive aggressively around the rest of us, because “they’re all idiots anyway”, and this directly affects our safety, hence people getting worked up.

How about using clips to highlight how so many road users think that a second off their journey time is worth risking the safety of another road user?

How about highlighting the gap between what cyclists are told (for example, taking the lane), and the instruction/impression that drivers are given (cyclists should keep to the left).

I should add that the title, reflected in your user name and email address, does suggest a “you’ve been framed on wheels”-level programme.
