    Jimmo is talking sense above.
Jimmo is talking sense above. Getting the bike properly fitted is a biggie – make sure you feel like the shop give a monkeys before buying, since the different brands/bikes available at that price are mostly quite similar anyway. Assuming you want/have a helmet, some good shorts and pedals/shoes could be had for £150, so take that into account.

I don’t know about the Raleigh, but they are generally thought to be hitting the spot with their recent foray back into road bikes. Giant Defy is popular, well-thought-of.

    Whereabouts are you?

Well after nipping into a LBS
Well after nipping into a LBS today, I’ve ended up with a pair of one-ride-old white ksyrium equipes that were going for £200 with warranty. So, now I need to decide what accompany them with. I’m thinking of tyres colour-co-ordinated with bar tape. So, red’s a bit obvious. Current thinking is either:

    Yellow
    Celeste green
    Blue
    Pink

Suggestions? (both for colour and products which provide those colours)

By the way, the bike is black with black group and finishing kit, and white transfers.

+1, people ask me how many
+1, people ask me how many pairs I’ve gone through, but still on my first.

That said, if your current setup isn’t giving you hot feet/knee pain/something else, I’d spend the upgrade urge somewhere else and leave well alone.

    How about starting a
How about starting a crowdfunded advertising campaign? I’ve been thinking about doing this for a while. Post it on somewhere like kickstarter, get some funding in from cyclists around the country, ask the big names to pile in for the good rather than payment, and take out some high-profile adverts.

No-one else is doing it for us.

It would somehow need to acknowledge that either:
All cyclists need to obey the law as well
    or
Don’t lump us all together and decide that just because a cyclist cut you up yesterday, you can kill me today…

My knee kept me away from cycling completely for years. I thought I would give it a go again last year, and it turns out knowledge has moved on considerably since then – god bless Speedplay pedals, body geometry insoles and a local sports therapist!

I bought one of the rain jackets in the Manchester Rapha sample sale – I’ve only had to use it twice, because it’s a bit bulkier than a pak-a-jak so I only take it if it’s properly persisting down. Brilliant though, my numb hands/feet get jealous.

Going to have to buck the mini-trend here and say that I’ve enjoyed the first two issues.

I sent an email querying something in the mag, and although they don’t seem to have a letters or Q&A page yet, someone bothered to make a personal reply instead.

The look and feel is a bit like Wired, high quality images, long(ish) articles and it’s nice to sit down with rather than just grab 10 minutes a la CW.

Gkam’s right that it’s trying to be different to the others – give it a go.

@mostyn – nice deal, but I can’t make the jump to the elites, equipes is about the limit.

@hatter, I note the black ones are still £300 – how do the silver ones look? I can’t help thinking it will look retro, and a bit odd on a carbon frame?

Loving the tractor story – I got stuck behind one coming home where I try and nail it the short distance from the lights up onto the mway bridge. I thought, well that’s never going to be a quick time, but it turned out to be a PB.

Mismatched bidons are definitely a good excuse.
