    An aero frame is typically
An aero frame is typically heavier, with the emphasis on the relative bit here. For the kind of money we’re talking about, you’ll still be able to build one to 6.8kg or thereabouts, so I don’t see weight playing a part unless you’ve some sort of 5kg madness in mind.

Well in that case, go right
Well in that case, go right ahead!!

I think I see it as being that simple because it’s essentially the same approach as is necessary in my work – people think that I make lots of decisions, but in reality I just try to understand all the constraints really well and the solution kind of picks itself (albeit only to a certain extent). The problem, of course, and indeed the strength of a forum, is that unless you’ve tried every component going, you don’t necessarly know what your preferences are. If you’re spending that kind of cash though, do you have a relationship with the shop such that they will let you take out some of the higher end stuff for extended test rides?

Now if I just hadn’t got married and had these pesky babies, I’d probably be buying the same kind of bikes…

Where are you anyway? Did you see that thread on De Ver bikes? Strikes me that this kind of money could buy you anything you wanted at their prices.

    Don’t take this the wrong
Don’t take this the wrong way, but wasn’t it you that posted recently having gone from Ultregra Di2 to Dura-Ace mechanical, then bought Di2 again? And now you’re looking at this? Don’t misunderstand me, if you’ve got the cash, you spend it how you want and don’t let anyone tell you different (and what lovely things to spend it on! 😀 ), but are you geniunely doing this?

I suppose the reason I ask is that while it’s entirely reasonable to see many “what bike for a grand?” threads, I’d expect someone who is in the market for something like this to understand their requirements and preferences to such a degree that the bike will pick them rather than the other way round. (e.g. My intended style of riding + required geometry + preferred materials/components etc, + nice paintjob = bike x).

Apologies if I’ve mistaken you for someone else, or similarly, if I’ve been presumptious about your method of buying bikes.

Hmm, I wonder whether they’ve pulled it because the author has been made, via the comments, to look like a selfish prat whose right foot is writing cheques that his skills can’t cash, or because they just don’t want the negative PR from all the fuss.

    UNDER £2000

    Incredible! :O :O :O :O :O :O :O

Actually, this brings to mind the recent debate about the retail price of bikes being more than the sum of their parts – this is the complete opposite.

Deda SuperScuro RC frame – £1799 at Chicken Cycles
Ultegra 6800 11 speed – let’s assume (perhaps unfairly?) this is grey import stuff, so £600-ish from the likes of Merlin
Mavic carbone sls wheelset – £765 at Chain Reaction

That’s £3165, before adding bars and tape, stem, saddle, tyres and tubes, so I reckon £3500 would be a reasonable total for self-build.

    That is an absolute bargain.*

*Is it ok to turn up to the club run wearing 40mm Cosmic Carbones?! Seriously, I do wonder about this!

The only problem I have with
The only problem I have with it is that I need a taller head tube than the Deda offers. A big stack of spacers would just look wrong on that bike, and I don’t see a suitable alternative (unless spending the big bucks) on the bike builder app.

An alternative config I came up with was:
    Super Scuro RS
    Campag Athena 11sp
3T finishing kit including the Integra stem to make your Garmin look sleek
    Campag Zonda wheelset
    Also £2k.

I do see your point, but
I do see your point, but ultimately a pedestrian doesn’t have to obey traffic laws. I think the more significant point is that the cyclists did obey the red light, but still managed to antagonise another road user due to a lack of understanding (IMHO – others may think they should have waited for the green light itself). A cynic might well think they’re just as well running the red entirely.

“When I’m out on a bike and I
“When I’m out on a bike and I see someone doing something stupid I will absolutely have a word with them at the next set of lights,” he says.

He will catch you, and looking at his forearms, you probably wouldn’t want to make him any angrier either. I suspect he’s a really nice guy, I’d love to go for a ride with him.

I don’t want to agree with him regarding respect – an idiot pulling a wheelie on the pavement has nothing to do with me – but I do think that while other road users perceive us (however wrongly) as a single homogenous group, he’s kind of (struggling to say this) got a point.

I have met him four times now. Once in the street in Covent Garden hanging out with David Millar. Twice at charity dinners. Once at the airport in Brussels after last years Paris Roubaix.

In addition I have been calibrated by the ‘Association Internationale du Tosser’ (AIT), after completing a lengthy course and assessment.

On that basis I am able to say, officially, Sir David Brailsford is not a tosser. On the Kampinsky Tosser Scale (see Wiki) he only scores a Gamma 0.75 Rating. I mean, the Dalai Lama is a Beta 0.34!! He is open, humble, generous with his time and damn it, he even asked me questions about my own cycling interests. He was open enough to tell me the specifics on why he was disappointed about the Team Sky performance at P-R in 2013, including his frustration at one certain Nordic rider for not eating sufficiently during the race…..that is pretty damn open. It’s not like we are mates. I don’t think he recognised me.

    I hope that helps everyone.

Perfect mix of fact and humour. Post of the Week for you, sir!

So, how do I get myself scored on the Kampinsky Tosser scale?!

Well it’s just not British is
Well it’s just not British is it? These aren’t plucky underdogs that are sticking it to the cycling giants from mainland Europe. This is a bunch of ambitious, intelligent riders and staff who are ruthless in their pursuit of excellence. It doesn’t help that they’ve partnered with two firms who are associated with affluence and excellence, in Jaguar and Rapha.

What I do find weird is that people have such a problem with it’s riders being human. If Wiggo sustains a TT pace for 25 mins in order to ensure a climb becomes ‘selective’, that’s boring, but if he has the explosiveness to just drop everyone, that’s doping! If Porte can nail everyone on a climb as a tactical move, that’s doping, but then when he’s nowhere the day after, well he’s clearly cr@p and has left his leader isolated!

Maybe it’s because they are disruptive, coming in and basically telling everyone (or demonstrating, via results) that they are doing it wrong.
