The councillor is right – the parking will be a hideous blight on the street. Rather than allowing people to do it if they pay, they could try banning it altogether – that would solve the problem.

Well, at least in part, it will be because the source crude is only one cost of many that has to be factored in. Leaving aside costs of refinement, there will be costs of franchising, of employment, of taxes, of heating and lighting, etc., etc., which may all have increased over the last ten years. Then you also have to consider sales of other products – if those have fallen, or margins have shrunk, the shortfall would have to be made up in the price of the core product.

Intrigued to note that the headline takeaway is apparently the crashing into WHSmith, and not so much the other car which somehow ended up on its roof…

As a pedestrian, I’ve had a number of occasions where a driver has waited patiently for me to cross a side road, where previously daring to set foot on the road would have been met with at least an angry stare and possibly a blast on the horn as they brushed past my nose. It was quite disconcerting the first couple of times.

A lot of garage / car combinations now, if you did manage to get the car inside, you wouldn’t then be able to open the door to get out.
