Go handbuilt. You’ll get a better, stiffer lighter wheelset and have someone nearby to repair or rebuild them in the case of damage or wear. Much better for the planet and better for your pocket! DCR built me some great wheels, there are many others too. I just wish I’d listened earlier to the people who’d told me to go handbuilt.

Yes you can run 11 speed Campag cassettes with 11 speed Shimano groups, and 11 speed Shimano cassettes with 11 speed Campag groups. I have both and swap wheelsets without even remembering which is which.

I’d advise getting a really nice used steel frame – maybe a Bob Jackson, a Brian Rourke, Saffron, or something like that – and putting a modern groupset on it. LFGSS has a whole thread on it:
https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/212733/I’ve found my Rourke to be unbelievably smooth and comfortable even though I can’t fit more than 25s (on wide rims) on it. Indeed, I reckon the current fad for very wide tyres is only because of the need for very stiff uncomfortable forks to cope with disk brakes…

I’ve had no problems with mine – indeed, they hold air better than butyl tubes. Sounds as if you have either a manufacturing defect or have punctured them.

I hope you’re going to post that in the reader’s bikes post. With the bargain price!

That’s completely normal, it’s how they come. The angled tops to some cogs are to allow the chain to shift neatly. Relax and keep on riding!

Having had problems getting
Having had problems getting into some of the smallest cogs, I dissembled my Athena rear derailleur (done about 5000 miles so far) and the pivots were completely dry. A bit of grease and a faff getting the pivot bolts back in but it does now shift cleanly down to the 12 cog.
Much more likely than ‘wear out’ is ‘get bent’, either the derailleur hanger or the jockey wheel cage can get bent through dropping the bike, parking clashes and so on, and that will affect shifting quality rapidly. I’ve a suspicion that the Athena mech has a slightly bent lower cage, because there’s too much chatter from the chain going through the jockey wheels.

That’s an excellent bike for £300! I’m still riding a 21 year old Brian Rourke.
You can upgrade the groupset if you want to, but I’d start with the wheels, but only when you need to. Ride it a lot, and think of how many hours you didn’t have to work to pay for it!

Change the cable first, if the end breaks off in the shifter it is close to impossible to remove.

It will be fine, I’ve got Rubino Pros much older and more cracked than that! The strength is in the cloth, the rubber on the sidewalls is just to keep the cloth covered up.

Get a decent one – I got one from these people, who gave great advice:
https://www.allendale-ultrasonics.co.uk/It doesn’t work miracles – you’ll still need to scrub a dirty cassette first – but it’s brilliant for making things really squeaky clean in hard to reach places. The OH does her glasses in it – it gets dirt out of the edges which she can never otherwise shift.

I notice Highways England have a totally disingenuous article – that talks in passing about infilling – in this edition of Highways Magazine (pp12-13):
