Do you actually like your Missus?
If you do, throw the cracked seatpost away.
Otherwise, yeah give her a dangerous seatpost without that might impale her if it breaks without warning.
Jeez.

In my experience BB386 push
In my experience BB386 push fit bearings have been flawless for both Shimano and campag for several thousands of km of all-weather commuting. BB386 is different from the other press fit standards, as the whole bearing is inside the frame structure. I can readily see why PF outboard bearings are a bad idea, but PF inboard bearings seem fine, from an admittedly limited experience.
Traditional square taper bottom brackets are great too, but they are a bit of a mare to get in and out, and to get the cranks off, not that you have to remove them often.
I’m old enough to remember cotter pin cranks, which were a total piece of crap, though the bearings did seemto last a long time, even if they were never particularly smooth.
For my 2d, external BBs have the edge because they are so easy to remove and replace.

I always say hello or wave on
I always say hello or wave on a Sunday morning run. Sometimes returned, depends on how much they’re taking in around them. Also sometimes fail if I’m suffering on a climb too much, apologies to anyone who missed out. Also sometimes if I’m concentrating on the road ahead I might not notice until too late. Also say good morning to joggers, horse riders, gardeners, dog walkers etc. Helps them to realise cyclists are human beings too.
In London commuting there’s too many people and theyre too busy trying to get to work alive to chat.
I also walk a lot, and me and the other half reckon that the only walkers who don’t say hello or at least nod are those who just walked from the car park. Anyone who’s out for a day walk will say hello. Sometimes quite chatty.

Don’t clean the rims with GT85, clean them with vinegar. Etches them very very gently for a brilliant improvement in stopping.

Campag make a super useful
Campag make a useful little plastic tool (UT-FD120) to help with lining up the cage with the cogs. There’s no reason it wouldn’t work with Shimano:

The packet contains two, one for 53t and another for 50t. Really useful.

Hello Glyn, welcome!
Can’t help with the Billy Jones frame, but it appears there’s still a Billy Jones Memorial Trophy run in Dudley each year as a 10 mile endurance track race:

Perhaps someone at the Halesowen Athletics and Cycling Club there could help you:

What he said. Definitely go for an excellent alloy frame with a better groupset, than a cheap carbon frame and a fairly rubbish group as it would be for £999.

Change the chain. Those Wipperman chains are a bit basic IMO.
People might laugh but I also reckon that Ultegra cassettes are notably quieter than 105, maybe its the machining or the finish, not sure.
