There looks to be too much slack on that cable. What position was the gear lever in when you tightened the cable ?

Just had a look trialling with a leki pole and that looks a good shout.Although I can go one better. Simply strap the pole on so it sticks out 1.5m sideways so drivers give you space !

When I injured my knee, I used a trekking pole that collapsed down its 3 parts in 1 short one.
The leki one is 670mm and easily fits my small daysac and trivial for my larger one.

Put the bike on a roof rack ~ 5 hour trip.
At the hotel the front tyre was completely flat ! Must have had a bit of grit that was pushed in when clamping the wheels.
Also the back was losing pressure from an old repair- I hazard the increased pressure from the clamp led to this.
