A new catch-all Tea Shop thread for those miscellaneous new stories that don’t quite fit with parking, crashing into buildings or trapped/prisoners in their homes.

Sadly the image accompanying the article is “A generic photo of a swan” and not the actual bird in question.

Random driver account: “cyclists should be made to wear hi viz like workers do on a building site”.
me : Oh really? Would that be as part of a H&S regime, so a duty to establish a safe system of work, carrry out risk assessments, train staff on safety procedures, carry out regular assessments as work progresses, report incidents, penalties for employers who do not comply?

I guess that one will come around again in the autumn. So compare and contrast the usual response to road incidents with the handling of this very sad tale dating from 2016.
Wilts & Berks Canal Trust volunteer unlawfully killed
paywall, I’m finding, but I can’t recall there being a verdict of unlawful killing for a cyclist from a Coroner
Prosecution, £30,000 fine

Prevention of deaths report
“put more guidance for vol orgs on your website”, I guess that’s no so far off “improve the road markings”

How much people paid for
How much people paid for ‘free parking’ in Hereford
Yet drivers still made 1,607 payments during the afternoon, both by card and cash at the machines and via the council’s newly introduced JustPark app, totalling £5,510.60 – an average of £3.43 a time.

I liked this, the BID lay on free parking one Saturday afternoon, but drivers dutifully pay up anyway.
Cars aren’t going to solve your problems, guys.

It raises the question of why (or whether) the driver was even trying to park there; but for me, the scariest comment is by the taxi driver who says it’ll be “a real problem” later in the day when that road gets busy. Why on earth is a road which looks like that EVER busy? That’s surely a massive failure of town/traffic planning??
