If you’re referring to me as Rich_cb’s defender, then I was acting more as a character witness (assuming that’s even possible across t’interwebs). Don’t go bringing my boredom threshold into this – I didn’t even read all of your reply. Personally, I doubt very much that anyone on this site gets involved at all with people trafficking.
To be fair to Rich, he never claimed he was a fan of the Australian government’s policy of paying people traffickers to try to reduce the numbers of asylum seekers. He said he was a fan of it as he incorrectly claimed it prevented drownings. So even when you provide the multiple links where he has heralded the Australian model, he will still be able to plausibly deny the exact wording of your sentence.That thread/discussion just carried on and on for long enough that no-one could physically read all of it – Rich_cb could have said anything at all on there. More seriously though, he strikes me as being compassionate (as well as argumentative at times) so it doesn’t ring true that he knowingly supports anything that leads to increasing deaths.

I’ve got the same response from my complaint. It was really disingenuous of them to edit that video and I don’t see that taking out 10-15 seconds is really about the video length.

So the next dilemma is whether to report something like this. Obviously the driver has given plenty of clearance and visibility ahead isn’t too bad but is clearly illegal as I’m travelling at at least 20 mph. If they are happy to cross the lines in this situation what’s to stop them doing the same close to a blind bend. What would you do?I agree with Bungle_52 – I wouldn’t bother reporting that, but I have reported close passes where the driver attempts to not cross the solid white lines.
I did report one instance where a truck overtook me despite me being in primary (going quick, downhill and just before a blind corner) and the double white lines had just begun – the police didn’t think the overtake was dangerous (it wasn’t a close pass to be fair) and weren’t interested in pursuing it. It probably depends on which police force you’re dealing with, so maybe give it a shot and see what feedback the police give you.

Still waiting to find out what “apparent gearing” means.It’s the ratio of force applied to the pedal versus force provided to the rear wheel for propulsion (i.e. where the tyre hits the ground). It’s basically like gear inches but also taking into account the crank length (i.e. size of lever).
To be fair, the difference between different crank lengths is a small effect and most of the time you’d choose a crank length to fit your legs (and hopefully not hit the ground).
If you consider your 50×13 gear example – a longer crank would propel you a certain distance for the distance that your foot moves, whereas a shorter crank would propel you a longer distance if you moved your foot the same distance. Your feet are moving along the circumference of a circle with the crank length being the radius.
Additionally, different size tyres would also make a small difference to apparent gearing.
No, sheldon brown doesn’t know the answer to everything. Despite it being a parameter in his gear calculator, crank length has no bearing on a gear ratio. If your chainring is 3 times the size of your sprocket then for every turn of your chainring your sprocket (abs so therefore your wheel) will turn 3 times regardless of the length of crank used to turn it.Heretic!
Crank length does have an effect on the apparent gearing – a longer crank will mean that the foot and pedal travel further for each rotation of the back wheel and require less strength (with a shorter crank being harder to push). Similarly, the wheel size doesn’t directly affect the gear ratio, but does affect the apparent gearing (c.f. penny farthings).
