The cannister looks threaded so any cycling inflator (e.g. innovations) would be perfect for inflating the tube with N2O.

That would bring us back to blaming cyclists as the suppliers of N[sub]2[/sub]O would be selling creamery products rather than cycling products. However, if a cyclist fancies a quick hit mid-ride, then it would save weight to use your spare inner tube and inflator, but I don’t know why you’d throw away the inner tube if it wasn’t punctured.

    I had my like buttons

I had my like buttons disappear and then they all came back a couple of weeks ago. I’m on Linux/Firefox/Adblock Plus and NoScript, so it’ll be not allowing javascript somewhere.

    Dear OP,

Did you read the writing on the side of the cannister to see if it was CO2 or N2O ?

Did you actually check that the inner tube was punctured ?

Whats’ the long tube (mouth piece) that appears to be fitted over the valve ?

It’s a rather rash assumption that a cyclist left the litter as if you look closely at the photo you can see that there is no cycle branding label on the cannister (which also helps to stop the thing sticking to your hand when inflating) which suggests it’s of the catering kind.

It may be that a nefarious Nitrous Oxide (N2O) abuser inflated the inner tube from the cartridge (using an appropriate pocket device).  They then inhaled multiple small hits from the inner tube instead of blowing the back of their head off taking it directly from the cannister.  They could also have passed it round to their mates for a go.

Once they were done with it they lobbed the litter out of the car window.

I had always thought that nitrous oxide was NO, but apparently NO is nitric oxide – you learn something every day. I’m not convinced that someone would use an inner tube to huff N[sub]2[/sub]O as you wouldn’t be able to connect it to the creamer device whereas a typical balloon can just be stretched over the nozzle (and is cheaper).

Exactly, that’s what we’re trying to find out.

    My experience with SPDs is

My experience with SPDs is that the performance benefit is typically exaggerated. It’s less efficient to actually pull up with your trailing foot as you use smaller muscles in a motion that they’re not optimised for. Although you can generate more power by pulling up as well as pushing down, you use much more energy – only really useful for sprints/attacks.

I think the main benefit of SPDs is that they hold your foot in a consistent position, so you don’t need to expend energy keeping your feet in contact with the pedals and it feels much more secure (until you stop at traffic lights and forget that your using them).

I also get foot cramps, but have found that I mainly get I’ve put in a lot of exertion, so I guess it’s probably from my calves being too tired.

I rode past the site of the Freshfields music festival last summer and was amazed to see the numbers of discarded CO2 canisters on the verges, reflected badly on cyclists I thought.

    NO (Nitrous Oxide), not CO[sub]2[/sub].

Perhaps all the drivers on here would like to apologise for the mess some driver or other left by Loch Eil. God knows how drivers can expect to be taken seriously when they do this sort of thing?

The difference here is that this is more likely to be fly tipping as I do not recall ever seeing a motorist change the tyre (wheel maybe, but not just the tyre) at the side of the road.

Drivers do need to be targeted with what litter they leave behind, but the picture you posted is not realisticly the type of litter they leave behind. I believe that litter is a massive problem and needs to be dealt with and the best way to do this is to engage with individual demographics as trying to tackle society as a whole is clearly not effective.

I don’t think that targetting demographics is going to do much for our litter problem – we need to be targetting the individuals.

There’s a quite successful scheme in Bristol to issue on the spot fines to litterers and it’s really funny to hear about the smokers complaining that they are being bullied – https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/news/bristol-news/bristols-new-litter-police-police-796092

I’ll not have you bring down the laughing-gas-asphyxi-wanking community like that. There’s no balloons, so it couldn’t have been us them.

You That lot need to have a good hard look in the mirror. Discarding your their asphyxiwanking paraphernalia so carelessly not only lets you them down, it lets society down too.

I’m more concerned about the lack of balloons – that’s how you freeze your lungs.

Thanks for your helpful comment Pilot Pete, the end of a perfect day.

You will gather that my blog is new, and intends to cover three topics – one being general cycling topics. Being a great fan of road cc, I thought that the  forum would be a good conduit for feedback on  cycling issues  that I felt worthy of comment. What I didn’t anticipate was being vilified.

If your comments are a reflection of the road cc forum  views – which  they do seem to be, I clearly need to think again.

There does, in my opinion, need to be honest recognition of where cyclists let themselves and society down. Until this happens we will continue to be considered as pig-headed pariahs by lots of people. It is somethhing that is worthy of sensible, intelligent debate.

As I said , I’m new to this and I got it wrong – the road cc forum was clearly not the right place for this to happen (acknowlegment to srchar’s post above for confirming this)

You’ll have to go into a bit more detail about how I let both myself and society down.

    I’ve been compiling a list.

I’d much rather have a littering asshole out there riding a bike than have a littering asshole sat in a car.

Also, if you buy/take something, then you should be responsible for throwing it away when you’re finished with it. I blame the teachers. And parents.

    I read this.

What’s the current obsession with getting the phone out and photographing anything that’s pissing us (society) off? Whatever had gone on before, photographing his house after the job was done is just deliberately provocative. What did you think it was actually going to achieve?

    This is unbeleivable [sic].

Taking a photo/video is just gathering evidence. It’s quicker and easier than writing down a house number.

I can’t believe that you think that just taking a photo in a public place of a publicly visible house is provocative. I bet you shake your fist at estate agents, don’t you?

@Davidw07 – I’d have been surprised if someone had reacted that way to my fixing a puncture too. In my experience, people are usually more helpful (e.g. offering use of a foot-pump etc).
