    What chance do we have to convince the non-cycling public that we are reasonable, responsible and public spirited people when one of our number does this !

    It doesn’t sound very safe, perhaps comparable to cycling on the hard shoulder? But maybe you wore hiviz to keep you safe?

    Also, if you buy/take something, then you should be responsible for throwing it away when you’re finished with it. I blame the teachers. And parents.

    This thread made me want to comment, however, i can see everyone else has summed it up nicely.

    As a cyclist we see what that litter is, and it personally offends us. It is however just litter, nothing less, nothing more.

    What one cyclist chooses to do has nothing, absolutely nothing, to do with my choices and who I am as a person. I would strongly question the motives of anyone looking to use this to push a wider anti cyclist mantra.

    In a couple of weeks, in the village I live,  the annual litter pick will be held. Villagers will assemble in the market place and be issued with gloves, bags and litter pickers.

    I found no inner tubes or energy gel wrappers last time. I had not thought to classify my fellow pickers by their transport, but I imagine that many will be motorists, some cyclists, and all pedestrians.

    I have yet to see a motorist bothering to write a blog post to express ‘shame’ and castigating fellow motorists at the sight of some motoring-related litter.  Still less have I ever encountered a pedestrian doing that ‘putting our house in order’ codswallop .

     

    This sort of thing seems like a very niche form of ‘virtue signalling’.  I don’t really see the point of it.

    You’re right, throwing tubes

    You’re right, throwing tubes away like this is unacceptable.

    But I have seen fridges dumped at the side of the road. And cooking stoves, armchairs, sets of four car tyres, a continuous trail of plastic bottles which once contained sugar water, lager cans, the debris of takeaway hamburger meals,  used disposable nappies, etc. etc.

    How can car users convince the non-motoring public that they are public spitited etc……?

    I am ashamed of cyclists who behave as you describe, but non cyclists cannot throw the first stone.

    Cannot claim to have ever seen this before however, fly tipping around the country lanes in my area is on the increase and this drives me mental. Probably more so than one discarded inner tube. Having said that, I would not leave the tube there either.

    I look forward to the day where I film someone fly tipping whilst passing by. Disgraceful behaviour by disgraceful people.

    I don’t know who left those items at the side of the road, and as you admit you don’t either, could you please not use terms like “one of our number” as if you, or myself, are somehow responsible for them?

    Well done for clearing up someone else’s mess though.

    As a driver, cyclist and pedestrian I’m also not responsible for any other idiots that litter.
