I’m wondering if there’s any correlation between people who don’t return their trolleys and MGIF drivers?

It does highlight the difference in acceptable behaviour between people walking around and people driving.

I’m more of a stander, but I’m trying to train myself to remain seated going up hills as it should hopefully be more efficient. For short hills it’s more fun to just stand and stomp your way up them but with longer hills I end up slowly stomping which ends up being disappointingly slow.
One advantage to switching between spinning and stomping is that you’re putting strain on different parts of your muscles so it’s almost like having a rest.

I had a classic example of a motorist hating me (a cyclist) as opposed to the traffic a couple of years ago.
I was commuting home along the A370 dual carriageway in Weston-super-Mare and as sometimes happens, the traffic had got backed up all the way from the M5 junction, so both lanes were full of stationary cars and trucks. I was happily filtering between the two lanes and some old codger shouted at me that I had to use the cycle lane instead as he’d paid lots of tax money to build it. Now, that had zero to do with me holding up traffic as clearly I was making progress and it was the traffic holding me up. Anyhow, I stopped and shouted “your ignorance is showing” at him and after a bit more shouting, I just went on my way, leaving him still fuming in his traffic jam.

I got my replacement pins
I got my replacement pins from eBay – they’re XT-M785 pad pins which work fine but are longer by a mm or two.
I think these are the same but I don’t know for sure: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Shimano-Pad-Axle-Snap-Ring-Retaining-Bolt-Pad-Holder-for-XTR-Deore-XT-Saint/164545894289
Have a look on eBay, Amazon or car/bike shops for either Copaslip, or any other copper grease – you’ll only need a tiny bit so you might get away with asking a garage or neighbour to use some.

My issue with road rage is
My issue with road rage is not so much that some drivers hate/blame cyclists, but that they think it is acceptable to express their opinions on the road whilst endangering cyclists.
It seems to me that some drivers treat the roads as a school playground and are trying to be the fastest or overtake the most as part of a game and if they then encounter a cyclist, they think it is part of the game to perform a close-pass for a bit of a laugh.
In any other part of adult life, that kind of behaviour is deemed utterly unacceptable, but people just accept it from drivers and often justify it. Just imagine if it the same attitude was shown to airline pilots who decided to skim tall buildings for a bit of a laugh or because they’d just broken up with their girlfriend or because some kid was screaming in the back of the plane.

This is less of a problem
This is less of a problem inherent with disc brakes and more of a bad design choice to use a slot-headed pin that screws into place even though there’s a retaining clip. If Shimano had just used a standard split pin there wouldn’t be this problem or they could have just used the hex headed pins that they do use on their MTB range.

Well, that puts the UK road rages into perspective.
Looks like he (the driver) brought a knife to a gun fight – I’d guess that she (the shooter) will have a good case for self-defense.
I don’t get why motorists get so enraged by how someone else is cycling – the worst case is that the motorist may get delayed by a minute or two which just seems insane to get into a violent rage over.

Should be fine though the rubber will be more stretched so it may puncture more easily.

I think I used a dab of lithium grease (it was closer) on mine, but at least with a hex head you can easily undo them (as opposed to the standard slot head made out of blancmange).

Short version – my bike shop used a dremel to cut a new slot in the retaining pin and removed it easily.
Replace those crap flat-head pins with some hex-head pins to prevent it happening again.
