    Woman killed in Colwyn Bay

Woman killed in Colwyn Bay crash after husband ‘blacked out’ and crashed into tree

Doreen Brough suffered multiple injuries after husband Trevor lost control behind the wheel and veered across the A547 in Mochdre

He told his wife he was feeling unwell and light-headed, and just wanted to get home.

“As I went along it got worse and worse,” he said. “I remember going round the roundabout but don’t remember anything (after) then.”

Mr Brough said he had never suffered a blackout previously but the inquest heard that while visiting his wife in hospital he became unresponsive twice, once for five seconds and the second time for 20-30 minutes.

She had been informed by North Wales Police that there was insufficient evidence for there to be a realistic prospect of conviction and so no charges would be brought against Mr Brough.

Why yes, yes it is fraud and a pretty naive attempt at that.

    Ah, public health.  From what

Ah, public health.  From what I see, they’re a polite bunch who tend to take a low key approach, referring to things like, congestion, pollution, opportunities for exercise, perhaps getting a bit chippy around junk food/ diet.  Substance use will be another factor.

Starting Well: A whole system approach to childhood obesity. (Cycling, not being driven everywhere)
Staying well: Maintaining independence through integrated, proactive and personalised care and support.
Connecting Well: Supporting communities to be physically and creatively active. (E.g. Cycling)
Financially well: Maximising opportunities for skills, training and employment.(e.g. not having your bank a/c emptied by a car you can’t really afford/ not having all the jobs on out of the way industrial estates)

    In our car-dominated world,

In our car-dominated world, sometimes it’s the little things that remind me that mass motoring has no future:

But Cllr Darling said the proposed development would depend on residents using their cars.

“The only access would be the already-dangerous A379,” he said. “We have seen multiple crashes and a fatality within the last year on this road. Adding an extra 240 cars daily is a recipe for disaster.”

We’re in Devon, at the northerly edge of Torquay and proposals for the redevelopment of a disused Sladnor holiday park. If you’re of a certain age, I recommend the collection of photos on Flickr of happier times and the current dereliction.

I took my parents to Jeremy

I took my parents to Jeremy Clarkson’s Diddly Squat Farm Shop – it was worth the wait

I’d been eager to visit the Cotswolds farm ever since it was announced in 2020, so was thrilled to finally have the opportunity after my parents announced they were visiting

Another reporter visits, but struggles to conceal a series of disappointments. I mean what’s an hour’s wait in the hot sun for er “While I could have easily spent more time browsing the shop, the queue system made me feel slightly rushed. The meats and cheeses were enticing, especially the sausage rolls, but due to our plans later that day, I didn’t get a chance to buy any.”

I’m pleased to report she did get an empty Diddly Squat glass milk bottle and outside the shop were “strawberries, courgettes in various colours, spring onions, and broccolli” and a broken-down milk “cow juice” machine.

    Campaigners welcome Mill Road

Campaigners welcome Mill Road bridge court case judgement as ‘taxpayer money wasted’

A court has ruled on the second legal challenge concerning the bus gate

The spokesperson continued: “We hope that this court case will now draw a line under the challenges to the bus gate that have cost local taxpayers so much money. It is important to remember that there is no such thing as the status quo. Nobody voted to allow a threefold increase in motor vehicle numbers since 1970 or for them to become so much larger.

“Calls to reduce traffic on Mill Road are attested in newspaper articles and political leaflets going back over 50 years and it is shameful that a C road was ever allowed to carry 12,000 vehicles a day.

Supermarket makes huge car park change and people driving a car for trivial reasons are furious

A Welsh supermarket’s plan to reintroduce parking fees has split opinion among locals

A third person added: “I park there. I shop there. Sometimes I just need milk or a birthday card so I object to the £5 minimum spend. Take it directly off the shopping and it’s fair.”

Drivers miss journeys the way they used to be

One of the natural breaks in

One of the natural breaks in the chain is tolerance and a recognition that you don’t have enough of an understanding of someone else’s situation to get involved in the conversation  as to whether “they” should be tolerated/ allowed to exist, etc. However, these are not people that are going to make an effort to find out any facts or different experiences.

Anyway, back to the news : Curiously enough, the KCC home/ school transport taxi budget is next up for DOGE scrutiny – curious because cabbies, at least the ones we usually hear from, are an obvious Reform fan-group.

Kent County Council bill for free home-to-school taxis nears £100m, says Reform UK leader Linden Kemkaran

[The KCC leader] added: “I’m led to believe that a lot of taxi companies quote KCC a rate that is way above the market rate.

“So I have tasked my DOLGE team to look at that specifically. Who is awarding these contracts? Does anyone do a market comparison? Are we getting value for money?”

The Local Government chronicle take – unusually no paywall:

     ‘Doge’ is beyond insulting

04 JUNE 2025 BY SARAH CALKIN

To suggest there is significant waste left to cut in local government ignores reality, and the transparency with which councils operate, writes LGC editor Sarah Calkin

“On examining the home to school transport budget he (Mr Fried) may find himself agreeing with Kent’s former Conservative leader Roger Gough that consideration should be given to means testing this service. However, unless the government wants to change the law, he would be powerless to do anything beyond ensure routes are as efficient as possible and drive down the use of individual taxis, all things which councils with these responsibilities are already doing.”

And I don’t mean to say that

And I don’t mean to say that cyclists are in for any of this; my prediction there is a position of “we’ll tolerate you on certain conditions – but don’t ask for any special treatment and if you get hurt it’s your own silly fault”.  Don’t forget that (simultaneously) car is king and drivers are a persecuted group.

Those conditions will include helmets and hi viz, mandatory use of “perfectly good” cycle lanes for starters.  If that works out, then insurance and registration will likely follow.  As I’ve said before, they’re pledged to remove most 20 mphs, so expect the same with “unpopular” bus gates.  This is why LTNs and bus gates need to be concreted in – now.

PS I overlooked in the earlier story about the Reform councillor asking a town council to take down a Pride flag – there was an informer involved there too. It doesn’t take long, does it.
