One more lane might not fix

One more lane might not fix it in Lincolnshire…

Council to fight £4m bat tunnels ‘that may never get used’ for relief road

The cost of the final part of Lincoln’s ring road has gone up significantly, but Reform say they’re determined to get value for money

Stalemate and no new road is what you’re most likely to end up with if you don’t move the water pipes; though Labour make noises about woke bats and newts not being allowed to stand in the way of <checks notes> progress.

EDIT – those woke bats in full – we’re back to this lengthy closure outside Malvern starting tomorrow

A449 closure: Council accused of ‘putting bats before people’

Worcestershire County Council has said night time working is not possible due to restricted access beyond the road, ancient woodland below the wall and the presence of rare bats.

Of all the places to be policing drivers so closely (and fining them) it turns out to be the airports. Given what the wider world is like, no wonder there’s such outrage.

Maybe Gary won’t try to cheapskate himself an airport pick up from his old man in future?

    Warwickshire County Council

Warwickshire County Council flag policy to come forward in September despite ‘discriminatory’ fears

It will be interesting to see what nonsense on this transpires next month – that and Union Jack dress girl (hopefully nothing).

The people who have had this one covered (probably as a result of some row years ago) are Harborough District Council, which has one flagpole. If you’re getting into flying at half mast for deceased staff members and armed services resident in the district that is quite a lot of admin.

    https://www.harborough.gov.uk/download/downloads/id/8373/protocol_for_flags_silences_and_other_marks_of_respect.pdf

EDIT – so there was a WCC Cabinet meeting on 4 September at which the flag flying policy was approved. There’s a livestream if you’ve the stomach for it.

Unsurprisingly the Union Flag, Warwickshire flag and St George flag will fly most days.  They’ve formalised the discretion to vary this as being with the Chairman (the County .council’s civic chief) which probably was the practice previously – but for a consensus / goodwill approach to work, you have to have, well, consensus and goodwill.  You can delegate functions to an individual councillor via Executive Arrangements, but they don’t seem to have done that here.

The other thing of note is the equality impact assessment – the heart of wokeness of course.  This seems to be saying “no-one will mind/ be affected” – set that against the response to North Northamptonshire’s decision a while back not to fly the Pride flag (downthread).  Of course these things are noticed, that’s why they’re so obsessed about it in the first place.  Although I feel for the council officers here,  it would be a shame if someone sought a judicial review of this nonsensical fudge.

    That’s interesting Nick.  In

That’s interesting Nick.  In the UK that would be headlined as “Village pub to close due to one petty licensing rule”.  We believe here that our pubs, rural ones in particular, have a divine right to exist, you see.

In our drinking culture, the BC rule would presumably prevent a seasoned drinker ordering a beer (don’t forget that’s at the bar and from a hand pump) and a Whisky chaser.

    A pushed-back wing mirror –

A pushed-back wing mirror – what cars do to people: Irate motorist from Strood who was clipped by another car followed the other driver around Wainscott and got her daughter to film it

“She admits in interview she confronted the man and then got back in her vehicle to follow him, not wearing her seatbelt.”

However, the court was also told that Keelan, who had no relevant previous convictions, thought the other driver was also responsible for stealing a car from her on a previous occasion.

She claimed she was angry, not only because he’d hit her wing mirror and caught her daughter’s hair, but because she had reported the earlier theft to police and nothing had happened, and that was why she had followed him.

Magistrates heard that despite being given an interim ban when she pleaded guilty, being disqualified from driving would have a massive impact on Keelan as she often ferried family members to hospital appointments. Her daughter would also have to sell her horse as she would no longer be able to take her to look after it.

    Ford shows me another one

Ford shows me another one they’ve just impounded; it looks more like a motorbike than a bicycle. He invites me to lift up one end to feel the weight of it.

“Imagine if that hit you – or a child – at 30, 40mph.” The fastest one they’ve seized was capable of 70mph.

Very little need to imagine that – just pick up any local newspaper.

I like the idea of “the type

I like the idea of “the type of rider who” as a way to present kit recommendations. I think the main divide is 60-90 minutes riding and less and over 60-90 minutes.  The main DON’Ts are denim jeans, and a cotton t-shirt. Anything flappy, chafey and absorbey will likely lead to a bad cycling experience.
