Up until a month or so ago, Tenways’ e-bike range was pretty narrow. You could have any kind of e-bike you liked, provided it was an urban single-speed with a rear hub motor. They’ve added all sorts since then though with the latest being a(nother) step-through mid-drive, the AGO Air.

As a quick primer, Tenways made its name with the CG0600, CGO800S and CGO009 – all of which are low maintenance single-speeds with belt drives.

Last month we reported that these had been joined by a couple of geared, chain-drive siblings: the CGO800 Plus and the CGO600 Plus.

Rather more dramatically, the Dutch brand has also launched a couple of mid-drive bikes: the SUV-style AGO X and the rather more stately AGO T.

> Review: Tenways AGO T

The AGO Air looks closest to the latter (which we reviewed recently). It’s another step-through, but a little sportier than the AGO T with Shimano Cues 9-speed derailleur gearing instead of Enviolo hub gears.

While the Tenways-branded mid-motor on the Air promises the same torque as the Bafang M420 motor found on the T (80Nm), we suspect it’ll deliver more oomph in practice as it seemed to us the hub gears imposed a bit of a ceiling on peak power on the latter bike.

Again, you get integrated lighting and a rack as standard, while the battery’s a little larger at 560Wh versus 504Wh on the T.

It surely hasn’t escaped your attention that it’s not just the Tenways AGO that’s attracted the ‘Air’ label in the world of e-bikes in recent times. Engwe, Swytch and – extra confusingly – ADO also employ the word with some of their bikes.

It usually signals a lighter weight bike, but in the case of the AGO Air we’re not really talking about something quite so “featherlight” as they would have us believe. It’s come in at 27kg on the ebiketips scales – by no means horrific for a mid-motor step-through, but far from spectacular in the grander scheme of things.

That is however a fair bit less than the AGO T’s 31kg and at £2,100 the AGO Air costs less too. They’re taking orders now and offering a £100 ‘early bird’ discount. It’s due to ship in ‘early May’.
