Tony’s journey in cycling media started in 1997 as production editor and then deputy editor of Total Bike, acting editor of Total Mountain Bike and then seven years as editor of Cycling Plus. He launched his first cycling website – the Cycling Plus Forum at the turn of the century. In 2006 he left C+ to head up the launch team for Bike Radar which he edited until 2008, when he co-launched the multi-award winning road.cc – finally handing on the reins in 2021 to Jack Sexty. His favourite ride is his ‘commute’ – which he does most days inc weekends and he’s been cycle-commuting since 1994. His favourite bikes are titanium and have disc brakes, though he’d like to own a carbon bike one day.

@RayG Even if the ticket revenues for this event were all going straight into rider safety, which I'll wager they're not, there would still be perfectly relevant questions to be asked as to why the ordinary cycling fan was being stung for the cost rather than it coming out of ASO's €30M profit from the Tour alone and the €130M it makes annually from its race portfolio.

@Daclu Trelub I'm also wondering if they're putting matting down over the setts leading up to the esplanade - imagine the number of potential pre-race retirements if they try to ride slowly over them uphill if it's bucketing down that night! 🫣

@HoarseMann I considered that probability - Just expecting the prime 'mid-priced' seats to have already gone. Not to mention there'll likely be an even bigger strain on the terrible ticketing platform...

@wtjs I went to Clitheroe to watch them freezing their tits off in the rain after weeks of glorious weather. The crash on the lower slopes of Pendle was actually one of the police motorcycle marshals who slid out on the cattle grid on the bend at the foot of the straight climb to the Well Springs.

Motornormativity is fuelled by ignorant journalists writing lies for click bait revenue. There is zero redress for this, they just publish any garbage. This is par for the course for antisocial media and the rot it spreads. Complicit are the police, CPS and judges who all drive and read the same garbage. They are not independent thinkers, and have almost zero moral compass where people who use a bicycle are injured by dangerous arrogant drivers. A broad powerful media campaign from the government could address this, but they don't have the courage to do what is morally correct.

@RayG You seem to be suggesting hipocrisy or double standards from the author. But I see no opinion in this article whatsoever, only facts and objective comparison to earlier events. Also, an opening ceremony is much different from an actual road stage.

@Cayo if it was a 'pre-sale' then there would have been a limited number of tickets available. Try again on the 30th when they go on general sale.

Going by experience over the past thirty years, that means widening roads, encouraging more driving and actively making things worse for pedestrians and cyclists.
