Slade guitarist Dave Hill breaks elbow in collision with cyclist

A not so Merry Christmas for glam rocker after incident on Brighton seafront last week

The Slade classic Merry Christmas Everybody has been unavoidable in shops, pubs and at parties these past few weeks - but it was a less than happy one for the band's lead guitarist Dave Hill, who fractured his elbow after colliding with a cyclist in Brighton last Friday, according to the band's website.

The incident happened as the 70-year-old took a morning walk after performing in the town on Thursday evening with  the band - now without former frontman Noddy Holder - on the last date of their Christmas tour.

Forthcoming dates in January and February have been cancelled, the band's management said.

The glam rock group's agent, Abbie Carter, was quoted in The Argus as saying: "Hopefully it isn't too serious. It looks like a clean break and Dave will be back performing in a couple of months.

"He's chomping at the bit to get back performing again."

No details were given of the cyclist, but we're guessing he or she wasn't riding a red-nosed reindeer.

Hill can count himself luckier than U2's Bono, who sustained serious facial injuries and shattered his humerus in six places after falling from his bike in New York City's Central Park in 201, giving rise to fears he would never be able to play the guitar again.

Peds wandering about in the seafront bike lane is an everyday occurance, it's not really fit for purpose.

interesting that the article talks about the pedestrian colluding with the cyclist, anything to back this up? or is it more likely he was struck by the cyclist. I'm pretty sure the forum gets quite worked up when cyclists collide with cars. Also making puns would definitely not be acceptable if a cyclist had suffered a fractured elbow in s road traffic accident.

One would make a guess that it was on the cycle lane along the seafront.  The cycle part being a magnet for pedestrians for some reason.  Maybe due to the somewhat ineffective barrier between the two of a line of paint.

That said, the stolen rustbucket on the pavement commandered by chavs syndrome is pretty rife in Brighton so maybe not.

But the first line of the linked Argos news item reads

Quote:

Slade guitarist Dave Hill has suffered a broken elbow after being knocked down by a cyclist on Brighton seafront.

So the article here is surely just inverting that bias? Fair turnaround, no?

Since when did papers ever report car-bike collisions as "cyclist suffers injury after being driven into by a driver"?

I was thinking the same thing.  Quite flipppant and light-hearted comments about the injuries that have been suffered, but if it were one of us that had suffered those injuries at the hands of a car driver, I am sure that the comments would be quite different.

Fact check. The band is only Dave & Don these days. If Noddy was still there the tour would have made big headlines.

Ah cheers, news of Noddy's departure didn't make it as far as road.cc Towers, article amended.

The cyclist must have confused him with another Dave Hill.
