Half a tonne of salmon delivered to Team Sky training camp thanks to rider's win in Norway

Gianni Moscon won unusual prize during Arctic Race of Norway

Earlier this year, Team Sky’s Gianni Moscon won a stage and the overall at the Arctic Race of Norway. He also won 500kg of salmon and earlier this week accepted his first shipment during a team training camp on Mallorca.

Norwegian salmon producers handed out prizes after each stage of the race, but it was the winner of stage three who really hit the piscine jackpot.

“It is the first time I’ve won something,” said the Italian at the time. (For some reason Moscon doesn’t seem to count ‘bike races’ when taking stock of his victories.)

“I will probably share it with my teammates,” he said and added that while in Norway he had eaten salmon every morning before the race.

TV2 reports that the first batch of salmon was delivered by Polar Quality and Kvarøy Fisheries and Moscon did indeed conclude that he had enough to spare a little for his team-mates.

80 people were served sashimi of scallops and salmon, grilled salmon and Norwegian Christmas herring, prepared by seafood chef Adrian Løvold from Trondheim.

“It tasted absolutely fabulous,” said Chris Froome. “I have never tasted such good salmon before.”

After three hard days of training, the riders had a rest day riding at a low intensity and Løvold, an enthusiastic cyclist himself, joined them. “We exchanged great tips and tricks both ways, since they were very interested in food, and I in cycling,” he said.

Moscon will get another salmon delivery before Christmas and then two more early next year.

Alex has written for more cricket publications than the rest of the road.cc team combined. Despite the apparent evidence of this picture, he doesn't especially like cake.

This saddens me. What is the point in killing all those animals? A stupid over-the-top prize? God humans are dumb.

I'm not against eating animals but I would rather win one of thsoe Belgian races where you get your weight in beer.

If salmon weren't meant to be eaten, why did the Norse gods make them so tasty?

At least they're being open about what was in this package.
