World champion Peter Sagan’s doesn’t need much encouragement to pull crowd-pleasing stunts – but he obliged one fan at the Tour of California yesterday who called on the Tinkoff rider to pull a wheelie.
Sagan was riding in the autobus towards the summit finish of Stage 3 on Gibraltar Road, in Santa Barbara County and would cross the line almost 22 minutes behind the winner, Etixx-Quick Step’s Julian Alaphilippe.
The Slovak rider had some pretty high-profile company in the group looking to make the stage finish inside the time limit – including Mark Cavendish and Sir Bradley Wiggins, both of whom can be seen in this video posted to Instagram by Ron Hirshman, the fan who called out “Wheelieeeeee!” as Sagan approached.
Born in Scotland, Simon moved to London aged seven and now lives in the Oxfordshire Cotswolds with his miniature schnauzer, Elodie. He fell in love with cycling one Saturday morning in 1994 while living in Italy when Milan-San Remo went past his front door. A daily cycle commuter in London back before riding to work started to boom, he's been news editor at road.cc since 2009. Handily for work, he speaks French and Italian. He doesn't get to ride his Colnago as often as he'd like, and freely admits he's much more adept at cooking than fettling with bikes.
