A motorist whose car struck an 83-year-old Merseyside cyclist who has since died from his injuries is said to have got out of his car at the scene of the collision before driving off.

Merseyside Police confirmed today that the victim, who sustained serious head injuries in the incident on Belvedere Road in Newton-le-Willows at 1.55pm last Tuesday 6 February, had passed away in hospital.

Police have repeated their original appeal, in which they said that “The male driver of the car was reported to have got out of the vehicle before getting back in and driving away from the scene.”

A 50-year-old man, who like the victim comes from Newton-le-Willows, was arrested on suspicion of driving without due care and attention on the day of the collision.

A spokeswoman for Merseyside Police confirmed to road.cc this afternoon that the investigation is continuing.

The vehicle involved was a blue Vauxhall Corsa and police have requested anyone with information to call Merseyside Police’s Roads Policing Unit on 0151 777 5747 or the charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
