Somebody needs to send her a copy of Carlton Reads brilliant book 'Roads Were Not Built For Cars' - perhaps then she would be better informed.

It is significant that Porter feels able to say that cycle facilities are destroying London, without being laughed at.

Any objective observer must surely notice that our road environment has been completely remade in order to privilege the motor car. The whole city has been designed to "keep the traffic moving", (except where the road is needed for car storage) with cyclists designed out, and pedestrians restricted to a small part of the road, allowed to cross at a few places and at limited times.

She obviously takes the present road arrangements to be the way things are naturally and the way they ought to be.

Motor traffic has transformed our countryside, towns and cities but Porter doesn't notice. She sees the attempt to keep cyclists a bit safer as an assault on the normality she rather approves of.

Shouldn't she resign from her Ramblers' Association job and join The Association of British Drivers?

I was shocked to read that you don't have to pass the driving test to be able to be a cycle messenger.  What next- where will it end?  Children being allowed to walk to school without a pilot's licence?

Just read JSP's article. A poorly argued and not particularly well written load of crap.

And people wonder why newspapers are increasingly irrelevant? When they punt out uninformed piles of sh*t like this then their demise can't happen soon enough IMHO.

However, looking on the bright side, if fulminating columnists are describing the likes of CTC and Chris Boardman as having "powerful backers" then it's a sign there are good things happening in the capital.

Well, The Independent is no longer availabe in print. It is now a news site like any other requiring articles that create big flame wars in the comment section to push the number of page views.

Expect this only to get worse.

I share your concern but let's hope it doesn't.

Yes I knew about the end of The Independent in print. I had been a fan in the early days, partly for how they upped the ante for the way photography was used and reproduced in newspapers. It later lost its way and became bland and seemingly without purpose.

Most columnists seem to be nothing more than loudmouth trolls whose only interest is in publicity (and of course the money it brings). This article eliminates the already slim chance that JSP's opinion on anything could be worth even 5 seconds of my time.

So Janet is a street walker, with a face like hers I can't see her getting much business.

True there are a lot of crazy old bats, both male and female like Peter Oborne, who will say pretty much anything as long as it gets them attention and keeps their slot in the inches.

Be fair lads, Janet faces a lot of competition from younger, better looking and brighter women.  She is trying bravely to hold on to her place in the journalistic firmament and it gets harder every year.  Her tactic is to be more radical, more outspoken and more bigoted than the rest, and up to a point it's working.  She seems to pop up regularly on TV and has somehow maintained her connections at the Indie.

I don't think for one moment she believes the guff in her article, she is too intelligent for that.  No, she's just putting herself out there, which is all part and parcel of living in her world.  Give the old bat a break.

Just saying, I don't quite agree with how you've expressed the sentiment, 'cos it comes close turning it into a gendered thing, which it doesn't have to be. Its not just 'lads' who suffer 'cos of professional trolls like JSP, and I don't know that looks come into it.

Particularly pisses me off 'cos I expected better of her, what with the ramblers association link and all that. But then I expected better of Joan Bakewell than the garbage she just came out with about anorexia.

Really all media types have to act like imbeciles these days, I think, because increasingly they make their money by pandering to the worst aspects of the rest of the population. Never trust anyone who has opinions for cash.

It doesn't matter if she believes herself or not... It fuels the bad sentiment towards cyclists in the part of the population who doesn't recognise JSP for her 'quality'.... so it's just a bad thing.

I don't see why we should give her a break just because she's writing rubbish. If she wants to write non-rubbish then we'll judge her on that, but in the meantime, it's only fair to take her at her word (i.e. she's a moron).

Why should cyclist get preferential treatment over pedestrians?

Do pedestrians have to walk in the carriageway then? No they have segregated infrastructure on every single street to keep them safe. In the name of equality maybe it's time cyclists had the same.

I clicked on this and read it yesterday, and dismissed it as tabloid guff. I didn't note who was the writer. I have to say I am surprised and disappointed it is JSP. What next; Frank Skinner calling for income tax cuts for high earners?!

Janet Street Porter is an uneducated (as far as transport/cycling goes..) buffoon of a 'never has been' level.

Her opinion is as much use as an ashtray on a motorcycle. Why bother giving her any more airspace....she's shit on the telly too...
