Chancellor has just announced that zero emission vehicles will now pay VED, and that VED will be hypothecated for spending on the roads.

The change is that new
The change is that new vehicle owners are no longer exempt for the first year of ownership. There will be three bands 0 emission, standard and premium. From what I can make out the current bands will still exist for current vehicles. It also seems that this will be for motorways and major trunk roads as that seemed to be his thing. Councils will still get their grant from general taxation and you can be guaranteed that local roads will continue to be rubbish.

It’s worth noting that ZERO emission (e.g full electric, as opposed to the current LOW emission, e.g. hybrid, some small diesel) vehicles will continue to pay £0 in VED. So we’re paying on the same basis as before.

I think I get your point but I’d say the opposite – it’s local roads that really need repair and improvement (including provision for cycling). I’d happily have some verbal abuse in return for a better surface below my wheels.

Motorists don’t know the difference between local and national networks – the worst outcome is that they are both more self-righteous while local roads continue to be neglected.

Damn beaten to the punch. If it’s only spent on the motorway network that’s fine but I have a nasty feeling local councils will have to bid for a share for the rest of the road network. That is something cyclists don’t need in this country, drivers feeling more entitled to use the roads than cyclists.
