Most bikes come with gears but are they the right gears for the type of riding you do? Cycle Surgery's chief mechanic Andrew Brown runs through your gear choices and how to fit new gears

In our last bike maintenance video we showed you how to set your gears up for maximum shifting efficiency - in this video we take things a stage further by looking at the different gear ratios options available to you and how to fit then to your bike. 

If the standard gear set up on your bike doesn't suit the terrain you ride over or your riding style - you can change it for something more suitable by swapping out the front chainrings or chainset and/or the rear cassette. It may sound daunting but with the right tools and some knowhow supplied by Cycle Surgery tech guru, Andrew Brown it is totally doable.

Missed a few options out, double sub compacts 48/32, 46/30 available now by FSA, also Absolute Black do rings for most compacts to reduce the chain rings. 

Also MTB chainsets work perfectly on road setups if you  still want even lower gearing.

There are 11-34 Shimano or 11-36 SRAM 11 speeds.   

 

Di2 currently has a triple front derailleur which works perfectly with 48/36/26 Doere chainset though it was designed to work on MTB groupsets of 42t or less.

1x setups now also offer rather wide range of gears, without the overlap of 2x and 3x setups.

My GRX is currently a 11-42, but I am considering in a near future changing hub and cassette to go to 10-42.

Starts being a rather interesting range, with a simple single derailleur system...
