We’ve just taken delivery of this Kalkhoff Sahel Compact. The 20″ wheel is a popular format if you’re a bit short of space, as it allows you to get the ride feel of a full-sized bike in a smaller package. The Sahel Compact also has folding pedals and a stem that allows you to turn the bars sideways to minimise the amount of space the bike takes up when stored.

The bike comes in a single 46cm frame size but is specced to fit a broad range of riders. There’s a long seatpost, and at the front the SpeedLifter stem offers easy adjustment of the bar height via a quick release lever. The frame iself is a cruciform design, with the top tube and down tube crossing in the middle of the frame. That gives the bike a fairly low step through but also a pretty modern look.

The transmission on the Sahel Compact is Kalkhoff’s own Impulse 2.0 mid motor. Kalkhoff first launched their mid motor system in 2011, so it’s a well-developed platform. The 2.0 motor, launched in 2014, has some smart features.
It uses shift-sensing tech to ease off the power when you’re shifting gear, so that gear changes – especially on a hub gear – are smoother. Shimano STePS and Bosch systems can do this if you’re using a Di2 electronic shifter but the Kalkhoff system works with mechanical shifters too: this bike uses a Shimano Nexus 8-speed hub and twist shifter.

The Impulse 2.0 motor offers torque sensing and three levels of assistance, Eco, Sport and Power. This bike is available with two battery sizes. There’s a cheaper 396Wh option but our bike came fitted with a 612Wh battery which should give it a prodigious range. Certainly cycling the 17 miles back from Bristol didn’t make much of a dent. The bigger battery is £200 more expensive. In this configuration the Sahel Compact costs £2,095.

The Sahel Compact is well equipped as a city workhorse straight off the shop floor. The big-volume Schwalbe tyres add a bit of comfort as well as being tough, and you get full mudguards and a rear rack. Front and rear lights are also fitted, powered from a dynamo front hub. There’s a kickstand and a chain guard, but no frame lock. Brakes are Magura’s HS-11 hydraulic rim brakes that are very popular on continental bikes.
