We’re seeing more professional riders sharing their race data on websites like Strava, and young Romain Bardet is one of them. He uploaded his stage 18 winning ride to the website revealing the full extent of his daring attack and solo ride to victory in Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne yesterday.
Bardet named his activity on Strava "Victoire sur le Tour. #happiestriderever". The activity reveals quite a bit of data about his effort, but there is an absence of heart rate and power data which is a real shame as it would be fascinating to see his level of intensity and power output on the main climbs.
– Tour de France Stage 18: Romain Bardet wins on second day in the Alps
What we do know it that the stage was 187km with 4,007m of climbing, and took Bardet just over five hours to complete. That’s an average speed of 37km/h, good going with so much climbing. He maxed out at 85.7km/h, impressive given the technical nature of some of the descents on this stage. Bardet is one of the better descenders and no doubt he won’t have held back much.

Any KOMs? Of course, he bagged the fastest ever time up the Col du Glandon. However, his time was later toppled by Robert Gesink who pipped Bardet on the leaderboard by a mere 19 seconds. We’re sure Bardet won’t be too upset by losing that KOM though.

He still has the KOM for Descente col du Glandon however, some 34 seconds faster than Gesink managed, proving just how hard Bardet pushed it through the turns.

Romain used a Garmin Edge 500 to record his ride.

Robert Gesink shares power and heart rate data on Strava
Robert Gesink, who finished 11th, has also uploaded his ride to Strava and, unlike Romain Bardet, does share heart rate and power data, providing a lot more insight into just how tough the stage was.
His average weighted power was 322 watts, and he maxxed out at 1,062 watts. His average heart rate was 126 bpm, his max 171 bpm. His total work, as expressed in kilojoules, was 5,030 kilojoules. You can view his Strava activity here.
