Laurent Jalabert has been seriously injured after being hit by a car while riding his bike near Montauban in southern France. According to press reports, the 44-year-old was unconscious when emergency services arrived at the incident, which happened at around 12.45pm local time, although he did regain consciousness as he was treated. According to L'Equipe, he has suffered multiple fractures including the tibia and fibula of his left leg.

During his riding career, most of which was spent with the Spanish outfit ONCE, Jalabert twice won both the mountains and points classifications of the Tour de France twice, was overall winner of the Vuelta in 1995 and of Paris-Nice three-times, and had victories in some of the sport's biggest one-day races including Milan-San Remo and the Giro di Lombardia. He was also world time trial champion in 1997. Nicknamed JaJa, he retired from racing in 2002, having spent his final two seasons with CSC.
