Amsterdam-based e-bike brand VanMoof has launched the S6 city bike, priced at £3,098, marking its first new model since being acquired by McLaren Applied-backed Lavoie in 2023.

The Dutch e-bike brand was declared bankrupt in 2023, and a month later was acquired by McLaren Applied-backed e-mobility company Lavoie.

The S6 is VanMoof’s first new model since the takeover and retains the brand’s signature minimalist design, with its overall shape unchanged and seamless frame welds carrying over. It also continues to feature integrated tech, but the focus with this generation has been beneath the surface.

The bike has been reworked to improve mechanical reliability and repairability, and now comes with an additional year of warranty as standard.

“Built for total harmony between rider and road, the S6 is the culmination of 5 generations and 11 years of e-bike innovation. Every element has been reimagined or newly designed in collaboration with McLaren Applied. It’s the definitive expression of everything we’ve created”, says VanMoof.

The Control Core is the central, upgraded electronic control unit described as “the strongest system we’ve ever built”.

Key features of the S6 include a 487Wh battery invisibly stashed in the frame, new automatic gearbox with 3-speed hub gear shifting and an integrated Gen 6 Kick Lock that secures the rear wheel with a tap.

Range is claimed at up to 37 miles in full power mode, extending to 93 miles in economy mode, while the complete S6 weighs a claimed 23kg.

You then get all of VanMoof’s usual anti-theft tech, including alarms and location tracking, and compatibility with Apple’s Find My network.

There’s a Boost Button for on-demand acceleration and a built-in phone mount so that you can use the brand’s app as a dashboard.

There are two options available, the traditional upright S6 with its 27.5 inch wheels, or the smaller step-through S6 Open, which uses 24in wheels. Both come in a single frame size, with the S6 Open suited to riders between 5’1″ and 6’5″, and the S6 designed for those from 5’4″ to 6’9″.

Both are available to order now for £3,098, with delivery expected within seven days. Both models come in a choice of three colours – Electric Blue, Drift Black and Pearl Mint – and come with a longer three-year warranty as standard.

To increase comfort around town, the S6 can also be specced with an optional suspension seatpost, adding 30mm of travel.
