Police in London are appealing for witnesses after a 29-year-old female cyclist was left in a critical condition following an accident involving a security van at Marble Arch yesterday morning.

According to the Evening Standard, the incident took place at 8.50am and the 46-year-old driver has been released on police bail after being arrested on suspicion of careless driving.

Police officers from the Hampton Traffic Garage are investigating the incident and anyone with information regarding it is asked to call 020 8941 9011.

Born in Scotland, Simon moved to London aged seven and now lives in the Oxfordshire Cotswolds with his miniature schnauzer, Elodie. He fell in love with cycling one Saturday morning in 1994 while living in Italy when Milan-San Remo went past his front door. A daily cycle commuter in London back before riding to work started to boom, he's been news editor at road.cc since 2009. Handily for work, he speaks French and Italian. He doesn't get to ride his Colnago as often as he'd like, and freely admits he's much more adept at cooking than fettling with bikes.

It always seems to be commercial vehicles involved in these incidents. Does anyone have any statistics on commercial vehicles versus private cars involved in fatal accidents in London?

Look here http://road.cc/content/news/27567-lorries-should-be-banned-cities-say-re... - not quite what you are asking but close: 4% of traffic accounts for over 40% of fatal accidents.
