The Udog Sempre shoes are roomy, comfortable and classical looking. The fact they’re wider than most will appeal to some riders, but do note that sole stiffness is more appropriate for those seeking endurance comfort over all out performance.

Udog was launched in 2021 and offers a range of classy looking cycling shoes. I’ve used quite a few pairs over the years, and on the whole, I’ve been impressed.

The first thing I noticed when I slipped the Sempres on was just how roomy they are. There aren’t any specific wide options, just standard sizing, but if you require slightly wider shoes than most out there then I’d definitely recommend giving these a try.

I tested them into the winter months and had plenty of space to ramp up the sock thickness for sub-zero rides.

For retention, Udog uses a single dial and the second iteration of its tension wrap system or TWS 2.0. It’s a patented system that uses a kind of strap secured to the insole that rises around the upper. As you tighten the laces, or in this case the dial wire, the TWS is designed to wrap around the outside of your foot to give a supportive and comfortable fit.

Overall, it works well. The only slight issue I found was that as I wound up the tension on the dial, the top of the shoe didn’t pull everything together as uniformly as it would with the use of two dials, or even with a dial at the top and a Velcro strap at the bottom.

It didn’t cause any discomfort at all, and actually I will admit that the TWS is very comfortable. A lot of that is helped by the supple polyurethane upper. It moulds well around your foot shape and the Sempres are nicely breathable too.

Speaking of the dial, it only has micro-adjustments to tighten. If you need to back the pressure off while riding, many systems allow you to click back again as well, but if you unwind this one it completely releases all tension and you’ll need to tighten them again – not ideal in the middle of the chaingang.

For protection, you get a large toe bumper and even though this particular model is completely white, they are easy to keep clean with a wipe over from a damp cloth. Only the TWS straps need a bit more of a rub to remove dirty road spray.

Inside is a well-padded heel section and some grippy material at the rear to stop your heel lifting. The tongue is well padded too.

The inner sole isn’t that thick, but I found it to be comfortable even on longer rides. Some of that comfort comes from the nylon-carbon composite sole. Unlike a full carbon fibre sole, there is some flex when pushing hard on climbs or when getting out of the saddle. Personally, I prefer full carbon soles, but I didn’t find these too flexible, at least not for general riding. It was only during hard efforts where I found the flex to be noticeable and on occasion I did get some hot spots on the soles of my feet.

The sole has a couple of vents which correspond with aeration holes on the insole for ventilation, but that is about it really. The heel and toe sections are made from rubber for grip when walking and it’s designed to work with 3-bolt cleat systems.

Sizing ranges from EU 38 to EU 48, and other than this Total White they are available in an Octane colourway which differs by having a black TWS and a dark green toe bumper. I have the EU 45 size (UK 10.5) and they weighed 642g.

One of the big positives about the Sempres is that the materials feel well made and any stitching or bonding is neat throughout. It’s definitely of a quality worthy of the £160 price tag.

Shoes we’ve reviewed at a similar price include Van Rysel’s RCR R which are now £179.99, but come with a full carbon sole and twin dials, but Josh reckoned the fit was quite long and narrow.

Quoc’s Escape shoes are priced at £150 and have similar styling to the Sempres. They come with a single dial and a carbon composite sole, and they weighed 516g – albeit we tested a size EUR 42.

I reviewed the FLR F-9 Strawweight shoes back in 2019, but wore them for many years thanks to the great carbon sole and soft upper, which made them great for performance as well as comfort.

Today they are priced at £159.99 and a pair of EU 45s weighs 520g.

Conclusion

The Udog Sempre Shoes are very well finished, high quality and very comfortable – especially if you have wider feet. The only thing I’d say is that if you do put out a lot of power, you might want to go for something with a stiffer sole, like the Cento for instance.
